Claude Matthieu, Count Gardane (11 July 1766 in Marseille – 30 January 1818) was a French General and Diplomat who was involved in Treaty of Finckenstein and Franco-Persian alliance. Claude Matthieu was a second lieutenant of Cavalry regiment, then he rose and became Captain in 1793. in 1807, Gardane was one of Napoleon's envoys along to Pierre Amédée Jaubert and Joseph-Marie Jouanin which were present in Court of Fath-Ali Shah. this Treaty was supposed to recognized a claim of Iran on Georgia and help it in War with Russia, but meanwhile Treaties of Tilsit with Russian Empire, forced Napoleon for peace with Alexander I and breaking his treaty with Iran. Gardane who was not successful returned in France in 1809 and get title of Count received twenty-five thousand francs. Gardane later had a mission in Portugal and participated in Hundred Days War, he died in 1818.

Early life

Gardane was born in 11 July 1766 in Marseille, son of Ange de Gardane, envoy of Louis XIV to court of Sultan Husayn,[1] Other than his father, his family were Merchants which were known in Levant.[2]

Revolutionary Wars

Gardane began his Military career as Second Lieutenant of 1st Cavalry regiment, in 1792 he became Lieutenant and Captain in 1793.[3] in 1795 by Directory, he became brigadier general and took command of 9th regiment of Cavalry.[4] he was in Battle of Neuwied and General Lazare Hoche in a report to Government mention his name.[5]
