Aabha Hanjura is a Kashmiri Folk singer from Bangalore, India. She is known for her Indian Idol presence and her songs Hukus Bukus & Roshewalla. [1]

Personal Life

Aabha, was born in Kashmir[2], & moved out from Srinagar to Jammu in the 1990s exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the valley, at the age of three.[3] She attended school in Jammu and then moved to Hennur in Bangalore in 2005. She did her commerce graduation from Jain college, and then worked for a company before she started singing in 2013. [1]

Aabha was taught during her initial years by her mother, who herself was trained under Pt Shambhunath Sopori.[4]

Music Career

Early days

Hanjura learned initial music from her mother, & later learnt Hindustani music from Pandit Shivkumar Sharma in Jammu. She went to take classes from Neecia Majolly for Western Classical in Bangalore. [1]

Sufistication & other Music projects

Aabha started performing in 2011 and went on to form her band Sufistication in 2012. In 2014, she finally resigned her position as sales head in CNN IBNs Network 18 to take up her career in singing. [5] Aabha Hanjura feat the Kashmiri Folk Ensemble is her other project. The ensemble uses folk instruments like the Rubab & the Santoor.[2] Using Sufistication, she performs sufi songs and ghazals. She uses Kashmiri poets prose and composes around it.

Aabha plays the Keyboard and the Guitars, but only privately.

The other members of the band 'Sufistication' include Mithun Kukundan on Keyboards, Osi Gomango on Bass Guitar, Christofer Powell on Drums & Sanjay Chandrakant on Lead Guitars (co arrangement). [4]

Musical Influence

Being influenced by Jagjit Singh whose music was passed down from her mother to her, she grew up listening to Bollywood music, Ghazals of Gulzaar & Abida Parveen.[2]
