The Dhubri boat disaster occurred on April 30 2012, when the ferry was capsized in the Brahmaputra in lower Assam's Dhubri district during a cyclonic storm. A total of 103 people are feared drowned [3]

The ferry was moving towards Hatsingimari from Dhubri was capsized near Fakirganj, after sailing in the Brahmaputhra for two and a half hours at 04.20 PM. Around 300 people was in the ferry then. Over 103 people were drowned and over 100 people went missing.[1] Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said the government was in touch with the government of Bangladesh to figure out the bodies which might have got swept towards Bangladesh. Rescue edit

Search operations were carried over by divers of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Army and the Border Security Force (BSF). [5] 103 people, including women and children, drowned and over 100 went missing when a packed steamer carrying over 300 passengers sank in the Brahmaputra river after being caught in a severe storm midstream in this district on Monday. [6]

Aftermath edit

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced an ex-gratia of INR 2 Lakh to victim's relatives from Prime Minister's National Relief Fund. [7] Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi announced Rs. 2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 for the grievously injured. [8]

Assam Transport Minister Chandan Brahma told journalists that the State government had ordered a probe to ascertain the cause of the accident and fix responsibility. He said a new ferry service would be introduced in a week to provide better river transport facilities in Dhubri district. [8]
