What I Do

edit

My editing can be divided into two categories: geography and recent changes patrol.

For geography, I tend to focus on Ohio geography - usually Cincinnati-area geography, but I sometimes poke my head into the other parts of Ohio and clean up some stuff there, too. I also like updating the population statement in the introduction of settlement articles to the 2020 figures, especially when there's a discrepancy between the infobox (which will usually have the 2020 figures) and the introduction (which oftentimes are still stuck on the 2010 census). So if an edit summary of mine says "Updated population in introduction to match data in infobox," that's what I'm up to. (I've recently been working on updating the population figures for Michigan settlement articles. Unlike most Ohioans, I hold no ill will towards our northern neighbor.)

I also patrol recent changes. Admittedly my enthusiasm for this waxes and wanes greatly, but I do my best to help out. From my experience, most of the edits that pop up in my patrols aren't vandalism, but rather well-intentioned edits from those who simply don't understand the ins-and-outs of Wikipedia.

Someday, I hope to start editing articles pertaining to Chinese history, but I believe that history articles are the most contested and delicate articles on this site (and rightfully so), so I want to make sure that I've acquired enough expertise and tact before I start doing that.

This is a collection of pages pertaining to the Wikipedia project that I find to be useful not only for my own editing, but the editing of all users, new and old alike. I've also provided my thoughts in italics. Check them out!

What Wikipedia is not The most useful page on this website about editing, in my opinion.

Citing sources and reliable sources Yes, you have to cite a source for that edit. Wikipedia would be utter chaos without citations.

Conflict of interest One of the most important sentences on this page (that is unfortunately overlooked by new and old editors alike) is the third sentence. You are not a terrible person for editing something that is connected to you, and your contributions are not automatically meritless. It's just that Wikipedia is built on a lot of honor, and since it's incredibly difficult to be objective about content connected to you, it's helpful for you to acknowledge it.

Excessive detail A general rule of thumb for me is that if a reader without any prior knowledge of the subject would be confused by the mention of something, it's a good idea to leave it out. For example, not everyone knows the name or location of streets in your community, so mentioning that all of these events happened at such-and-such avenue is excessive.

Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities/Settlements: Article structure Useful stuff about settlement article structures. One of the most important things to note from this guide is that entries under "Notable People" sections should have their own Wikipedia articles before being added to the section.

"Somebody keep deleting this sentence. Communism dictator government detected. They are the major factors on so much inaccurate content on wiki."

"Undid revision 1183203400 by Panian513 (talk) as an entreprenuer, im allowed to be impressed by other entreprenuers. Just as someone calling steve jobs a visionary isnt "promotion." If you're simply mad because no one will ever consider you a visionary, i couldve removed that one word. Rather than make lies up to purpohide and gatekeep public history and company ownership information. This is a fact page after all."

"You can try, but you will fail. Your actions have ruined everything and for Thanksgiving, no turkey for you."

"At 7’1” tall, Katya is the tallest drag queen to compete on national television. A 2010 documentary “Spurting Ropes of Growth”, filmed primarily on a dock of a Boston shipping port, was released detailing her experience of reaching a height of 7’0” as a toddler. Subsequently she only grew an additional inch upon the eve of her 16th birthday. Despite this, sources say that Katya appears to be ~5’9” in person due to a persistent optical illusion."

"this user is a recent change patroller: AKA, this user has no life, is a communist and loves to assert control over a meaningless website because it has no control over its own life. Living in it's moms basement can be emotionally distressing I'm sure."

"I despise Steve from Minecraft, and all known forms of recreation or joy."
