Alan Howard (born September 1963) is a British hedge fund manager, the co-founder of Brevan Howard Asset Management LLP, and a former director of the Conservative Friends of Israel.[3] In February 2013, Forbes listed him as one of the 40 Highest-Earning hedge fund managers.[4] In 2014, he appears at the 53rd rank of the Sunday Times Rich List.[5] His net worth according to Forbes is $1.5 billion as of 2016.[6]

Education and Early Career edit

Born in England to a Jewish[7] family, Howard attended Hasmonean Grammar School, Hendon London. Alan Howard graduated from Imperial College London in 1986 with a Masters in Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology.[8]

Alan Howard joined Salomon Brothers as a bond trader in 1986, before moving to Tokai Bank in 1995,[9] now part of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group.[10]

In 1997, Howard joined Credit Suisse First Boston,[11] where he rose to become head of fixed-income proprietary trading in London.[12] A colleague of Alan Howard’s at Credit Suisse, Oswald Gruebel, said that Howard knew “the value of risk, how much risk he can take and the availability of capital. That’s the main differentiation between a good trader and a bad trader, and he was exceptional.”[13]

Brevan Howard edit

Alan Howard founded Brevan Howard in 2002 with four other fixed-income traders from Credit Suisse Group AG.[14] The first part of Brevan Howard’s name is made up of the initials of the founding partners.[15]

Brevan Howard focuses on macro trading, seeking to profit from broad economic trends.[16] Brevan Howard’s investment strategy centres on multiple assets, including currencies and commodities, along with equities, derivatives, and fixed-income securities, focusing on short-term profit opportunities within a target period of six months or less.[17]

The flagship Brevan Howard Master Fund launched with $870 million on April 1, 2003.[18] Since starting in 2003, the Master Fund gained more than 200 percent through the end of October 2015, beating the Eurekahedge macro index and the Standard & Poor’s 500.[19] As of June 30, 2015, Brevan Howard had $27 billion in assets under management.[20]

In 2012, Alan Howard won the awards for Outstanding Individual Contribution, Best Hedge Fund Manager in Global Macro, and Best Hedge Fund Manager Overall at the Financial News Awards for Excellence in Institutional Hedge Fund Management, Europe.[21]

Howard serves on the New York Federal Reserve's Investor Advisory Committee on Financial Markets and is one of a group of financial managers who on occasion advise New York Federal Reserve officials on economic policy.[22]

In 2010, he moved from London to Geneva, Switzerland.[23] In 2015, Howard purchased a $14.5 million condo in Miami, Florida.[24]

Imperial College London edit

In 2014, the Brevan Howard Centre for Financial Analysis at Imperial College London was launched, having received £20.1 million in funding from Brevan Howard on behalf of Imperial alumnus, Alan Howard.[25] This cash gift is one of the largest pledged to a UK business school, matching the £20 million naming gift from Wafic Saïd to the University of Oxford in 1996.[26] The Centre is headed up by Professor Franklin Allen, formerly of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and Professor Douglas Gale, who came to Imperial from New York University’s Stern School.[27]

Howard has also established the ‘Alan Howard Scholarships for Energy Futures’ at Imperial College London, donating funds to the Energy Futures Lab to recruit Israeli PhD students.[28]

Alan Howard has been awarded an honorary degree in recognition of his philanthropic work and the support that he has given to the College.[29]

Contribution to the UK Jewish Community edit

In October 2014, the Alan Howard Foundation paired with JW3, a Jewish community centre and arts venue, to launch a speaker series in which world-renowned leaders and experts in their respective fields give an insight into their chosen topics.[30] Featured speakers have included Sir Paul Nurse,[31] Peter Thiel[32] and Nigella Lawson.[33]

Howard founded the Alan Howard Charitable Foundation, which contributes to charities that aims to support Israel and other Jewish causes with a focus on Holocaust education, the homeless and Israeli film.[34] The Alan Howard Charitable Foundation is among the sponsors of the UK Jewish Film Festival.[35]

Alan Howard also presides over a charitable trust which, in 2009/10, donated over £3.7 million to Jewish organisations focusing on religious education and health.[36]

Other Philanthropic Activity edit

Alan Howard is on the Parent Leadership Council at Columbia College,[37] a group of philanthropic leaders at the College, and he is also a member of the Harvard Global Advisory Council.[38]

Howard is a member of the Chairman’s Circle at the Royal Opera House, London,[39] having been recognised for his “exceptional philanthropy” since 2008.[40]

He is also a patron of One Family UK, an organisation dedicated to helping those in Israel whose lives have been blighted by terror attacks.[41]

Alan Howard co-chaired the Robin Hood Benefit in 2014,[42] supporting New York's largest poverty-fighting organisation, as well the City's largest private funder of schools, emergency food programmes, homeless shelters and job training services.[43]
