Early Life and Education

edit
  • Tim Brennan is a British contemporary artist, known for his diverse and interdisciplinary approach to art. Born in 1966 in County Durham, North East England, Brennan's work encompasses a variety of approaches, including performance, sculpture, photography, video, sound and text. He studied at Hull School of Art where he obtained a BA Fine Art degree (1985-88). Brennan furthered his education with postgraduate studies in Fine Art at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London (1988-90) and an MA in History, Public History and Historiography from Ruskin College Oxford (1997-99). Tim Brennan’s PhD from The University of Sunderland (conferred in 2009) focused on his development and establishment of the ‘manoeuvre’ as discursive performance articulated through his work with the form of the guided walk and guidebook.

Artistic Style and Influences

edit
  • Brennan's work is characterized by its exploration of social, political, and historical themes. He often uses walking as a form of artistic expression, drawing inspiration from the environment and its embedded narratives. His practice frequently involves audience engagement , inviting viewers to involve themselves in the work on a personal level. Brennan's influences include performance art, and land art, and the northern romantic tradition . He has cited artists such as Stuart Brisley, Joseph Beuys, the Viennese Actionists, Hamish Fulton, and the writings of E.F. Schumacher, Walter Benjamin and the Frankfurt School as significant to his development as an artist.

Major Works and Projects

edit

Fortress Europe (1990 and ongoing)

edit
  • One of Brennan's early significant works, is an accretive collection of photographs, texts, performances, sculptures, video and sound that respond to the geopolitics of a Europe in flux. Begun in 1990 as Brennan’s postgraduate exhibition at The Slade School of Fine Art the project has developed through exhibitions and performances across continental Europe and North America with over 80 works to date. Centre Regionale del la Photographie in Nord pas de Calais, France hold 36 Fotress Europe works.

The North (2007)

edit
  • The North, was a series of exploratory walks across Northern England. Through which Brennan examined the territory’s cultural and historical condition, documenting his journeys through photographs, watercolours, curated artefacts and text. This project highlighted his interest in the landscape tradition, how it  might be critically extended through the relationship between place and its multiple narratives.

Vedute Manoeuvre (2011)

edit
  • Vedute Manoeuvre was a guided walk and published itinerary Brennan designed for Palazzo San Marco, Venice for the 54th Venice Biennale. Like the majority of Brennan’s manoeuvres the walk was built entirely from quotations. For Vedute they were printed on the reverse side of a series of Canaletto studies of the Palazzo. Walkers were invited to reflect on the passage of time, human experience and its impact on the built environment . This work emphasized Brennan's commitment to engaging audiences in a shared experience, blurring the lines between artist and witness.

Waking Καλλιόπη (2022)

edit
  • In May 2022, Brennan and Northern Macedonian artist Ilektra Maipa exhibited their collaborative work Waking Καλλιόπη at the Athens Digital Art Festival (May 2022) and at Primarolia Arts Festival, Aigio (Sept 2022). The online work exists as an interactive web page focused specifically on enabling the user to create an onscreen poem by drawing a line with the cursor.

Museum of Angels (2003)

edit
  • To mark their 250th anniversary, Brennan was invited to be artist in residence at The British Museum. The work involved the production of a guidebook and  performances of the walk (manoeuvre) leading participant walkers through the world’s oldest museum. The walk was built entirely from diverse quotations and related to all of angels on public display in the museum’s collection.
