Hello, kind reader!
As you can infer from my username, my real name is Alan S. Kaufman. I'm not consistent about including my middle initial and sometimes I use my middle name Scott. I've long known that other writers have similar names. There's the poet Alan Kaufman and the psychologist Alan S. Kaufman. Ironically, I've also written poetry and I've several degrees in psychology. But there's yet another twist. I'd like to share an interesting story involving the latter namesake.
In the 1980's, I was counsel for an Illinois land trust company. One day an attorney walked into my office to discuss trust business. Staring curiously at my nameplate (which contained my middle initial), he stated that a client of his was the noted psychologist with the same name. I chuckled as I handed him a copy of the legal publication "Land Trust Counselor" of which I was assistant editor and lead contributor. He then also chuckled (I'm confident his reaction was to seeing my name in print, not the quality of my writing) and one or both of us commented about the small world phenomenon.
Whether you call it a small world, or synchronicity, or coincidence, it's a common but unexplainable experience that we all share from time to time. I've become fascinated by it and believe an unseen hand is at work, God perhaps? It has become a centerpiece of my favorite hobby since 2000, wrtiting articles for the web.
My subject matter is rather eclectic: a report on an event occurring on a public street, a tribute to deceased writer Rodney O. Lain, reviews of several movies (one of which I appeared in as an extra), a reflection on the romance between the comic book characters Supergirl and Richard Malverne. Interweaving a bit of autobiography, this personal touch sheds some light on my authority to write the article as well as heightens human interest.
