Hamilton Macmillan (3 November 1835 - 12 June 1905) was a Scottish painter and wood carver.[1][2] He is sometimes denoted as Hamilton Macmillan Snr. to differentiate from his son, also an artist.
Life
editHis father was Hamilton Macmillan [Snr] (born c. 1812), a cabinet maker from England.
His mother was Catherine McAlpine (born c. 1810) from Killean in Kintyre. Hamilton [Snr] and Catherine married on 13 March 1831 in Greenock.
Hamilton John Macmillan was born on 3 November 1835 in Glasgow.
He became a wood carver following his father's trade then a publican and then a wine and spirit merchant; but he also was known as an artist.
He married Grace Smith (7 September 1837 - 1901) from Glasgow. They married in Helensburgh on 29 August 1860.
His son Hamilton Macmillan [Jnr.] (3 May 1864 - 1 July 1916) was also an artist. His daughter Kate (14 June 1862 - 3 August 1933) married the Greenock artist Peter Kerr (6 October 1857 - 2 January 1940).
Art
editBoth [Snr] and [Jnr] painted similar landscapes, with [Jnr] paintings dating from around 1886 onwards but there is overlap in dates to 1905. [Snr] tended to sign his initials around the date, [Jnr] using a fuller H. J. Macmillan.
Death
editHe died on 12 June 1905 at his home in Blair Athole Villa in Helensburgh. The funeral was on 15 June 1905.[3]
