Hugh Allan (1 May 1840 - 6 March 1905) was a Scottish painter.

His father was Hugh Allan [Snr] (born c. 1795), his mother was Mary Muir (born c. 1808)

Hugh Allan was born on 1 May 1840 in Irvine.

In the 1841 census, his parents Hugh [Snr] and Mary had arrived at 78 Saltmarket, Glasgow. Hugh is recorded as 1 year old.[1]

In 1851 he was staying at 60 Centre Street in the Gorbals, Glasgow.[2]

In 1861 he was staying at 50 Surrey Street.[3]

In the 1871 census, he was a draughtsman living only with his mother Mary at 203 Thistle Street in Glasgow.[4]

Around 1873 he was staying at 157 West George Street and also 11 Govan View Terrace.[5]

He was between two houses around 1888-1891; 79 West Regent Street and 15 Camden Street.[6]

In the 1891 census, he was boarding with the Manson family at 3 Hamilton Street, Ardrossan. His occupation was recorded as a landscape painter.[7]

He had two houses between 1892 and 1900, 79 West Regent Street, Glasgow and 19 Eglinton Street, Irvine.[8]

In the 1899-1903 and 1905 to 1908 Post office directory he was at 79 West Regent Street, Glasgow.[9][10]

Death

He died on 6 March 1905 at Upper Woodend, Kilmahog, near Callendar, Stirlingshire. He died of congestion of the lungs and it was also noted on his death certificate that he had an enlarged prostate.
