GiveWay edit

GiveWay is an all-female instrumental folk band from Scotland. The group won the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award[1] and the The Danny Kyle Open Stage Award at the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow in 2001.[2]

Biography edit

GiveWay was formed in 1998 by four sisters, Fiona Johnson, Kirsty Johnson, and twins Amy and Mairi Johnson. All four band members are multi-instrumental. Fiona plays the fiddle, guitar and piano; Kirsty is a pianist and accordion player; Amy plays the drums and accordion; and Mairi is a bass player and keyboardist. All four are vocalists.[3]

The material is mostly instrumental and a mix of traditional folk standards and contemporary compositions, some of which have a jazz-influenced sound.[3] Some of the modern material was composed by band member Fiona, while the remainder is the work of other Scottish composers, including the band's producer, Phil Cunningham.[1]

GiveWay has supported other established folk acts in live performances, such as Kate Rusby, Aly Bain, Karen Matheson, Cherish the Ladies, Fiddler’s Bid and Natalie MacMaster.[3] In addition to the appearance at Celtic Connections, the band has also performed at the prestigious Cambridge Folk Festival and made an appearance on the BBC's Annual Hootenanny TV programme in 2002.[1]
