Tip of the moment... Wikipedia-specific searching with Firefox
In Firefox, the search box has a little pull down menu to allow you to choose which search engine it uses. Several popular search engines come included, but not Wikipedia. However, Firefox provides a page on their website listing more search engines you can add to that menu, including Wikipedia's search. To add Wikipedia, simply go here and click on Wikipedia in the list provided, and you are done. To activate it, pull-down the menu at the search box and click on Wikipedia there. Now you have a second Wikipedia search box. Unlike the search box in Wikipedia's sidebar, which disappears off the screen when you scroll down to read a long page, the Firefox search box always remains on the screen, ready to assist. (Keep in mind, typing Alt+F also places the cursor in the Wikipedia search box.) – – Read more: |
Usage
editThis is the {{User:Acagastya/totdr}}
template. This template displays the Tip of the Day box which is much similar to the {{totd-random}}.
This template is intended to be used at the top of the users' talk page.
Do not use the Wiki-code substitute for this template.
Who can use it?
editThis template can be used by any editor who wish to have a tip of the day box on their talk page.
Parameters
editThis template has five parameters:
Border Color
editThe parameter is used to change the border color of the box:|border-c=
Enter either the color name or the hexadecimal value for this parameter.

before the hexadecimal value.
- The default border color in this template is BLACK.
- I am not sure but this feature might not be available in
{{totd-random}}
.

editThis parameter is used to change the width of the box.|width=
You may choose the size either by the pixels example: |width=80px
or the percentage (%) value example: |width=80%
.
- Default is set at 100px.

editThis parameter is used to change the image used to purge the tip.|img=
Enter the name of the image you think would be appropriate.

Function
editThe function of this template is to display The tip of the Moment.
Difference between this and the original template
edit- I am pretty sure that in the original template, you won't be able to customise it.
- The space consuming bulbs' filament is broken! will not appear in this template. That is one of the reasons which lead to creation of this template.
- To add this auto-updating template to your user page, use {{totd-random}}....Say goodbye to this space occupying thing.
- But not this: Become a Wikipedia tipster. I can't remove it. There will be a huge loss to those who want to learn new tips.
Examples
editBecause the Tip of the Moment changes every time when purged and as the tip aren't of the uniform size: I will club the parameters together.

Tip of the moment... Please read department instructions
Some pages are active departments with their own set of instructions. It may be tempting to skip reading them and go straight to making edits or leaving messages. But this just clutters those pages and creates unnecessary steps for the volunteers of those departments. This happens a lot at the Help desk, the Wikipedia:Reference desk, and at Articles for creation. For example, many users ask general knowledge questions at the Help Desk rather than at the Reference Desk, because they didn't read the instructions at the top of the page. If you visit those pages, please take the time and read the instructions before making use of those helpful departments.

Tip of the moment... Spell Checkers
Here are some spelling checkers to assist you in your Wikipedia editing. Please spell check before you save an article. (Also nice for spot checking articles).
- Mozilla Firefox add-on for U.S English, also British, Canadian, Australian and South African.
- Google Toolbar offers spell checking in various languages for Internet Explorer.
- A well-designed spell checker for Internet Explorer is ieSpell.
- For Mozilla Firefox textboxes, there's SpellBound.
- Konqueror uses Aspell if it's installed and set up in your KDE Control Center.
- A good stand-alone spell checker for English Wikipedia pages is Inspyder InSite. (The free version is good enough for fixing Wikipedia articles.)
- The macOS universal spell checker is available in Wikipedia's "edit this page" mode while using Safari and in theory any other Cocoa-based browser.
