Radio 1 Rescores: Drive is a re-edited version of the action drama film Drive. The edit was curated by BBC Radio 1 and Australian DJ Zane Lowe, and features an entirely new soundtrack composed of 17 original songs by 13 contemporary artists. The film was broadcast once, on October 30, 2014 on the British digital TV channel BBC Three.

Production edit

Radio 1's project to rescore a popular film using new songs by contemporary artists began in 2013. The first film considered for a new soundtrack was the 1982 science fiction film Blade Runner. However, Lowe(?) opted to select Drive instead, on the basis that it was more "synonymous" Radio 1's audience. The original version of Drive has been released in two years earlier, in 2011. It was directed by Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, and includes a score by American composer Cliff Martinez and songs by Kavinsky, College and Chromatics.

For Radio 1's alternate soundtrack for Drive, thirteen artists were sourced to write original songs. Each artist was given a scene from the film and asked to compose a song that could be structured around the action. The entire project lasted 18 months. Lowe felt that it was "the most exciting thing that [Radio 1?] ever been involved in". He added: "It's the most ambitious, awesome thing we've ever done."

Promotion edit

The trailer for Radio 1 Rescores: Drive was uploaded to YouTube on October 20. Eight days later, on October 28, Lowe and Dan Smith, lead singer of Bastille, participated in a Q&A at The Space in London.

Some songs from the soundtrack were broadcast on BBC Radio 1 before the film was broadcast on October 30. On October 20, Lowe played "Get Away" by Chvrches (which features in the film's opening sequence) on his radio show, and named it his Hottest Record in the World. On the day of the film's premiere, British band Bastille and Scottish musician ZZC both performed their contributions to the soundtrack in Radio 1's Live Lounge with Annie Mac.

Reception edit

Critical reaction to the edit was mixed. Refn, director of the original film, said that the new version was an "ultra-cool glam experience" and that it was a "great honor" that so many artists had come together to create it. He praised the music for "never [getting] in the way of the film".

Reception from the general public was [?]. In the two days following the film's broadcast, [someone] reported that disgruntled fans had taken to Twitter to voice their opinions. Lowe defended the film, describing it as a "parallel experience".
