I am a resident of Anchorage, Alaska and have found the history of this area, and the state in general, to be fascinating. My interest is in researching and documenting the history of Western cultural colonization of the state. I do not intend to address the impact of Western Culture on the inhabitants that lived in the country prior to the arrival of Spanish, Russian and United States culture. Rather the direction of this effort is to research and report the establishment of Western "ownership" (There must be a better word), of what we now consider the State of Alaska.

The specific period I am starting from is the late 19th century. I contend that it is during this time - when notable capitalists of the period became interested in exploiting the mineral resources of the country - that the greatest changes began to occur. However, history is a continuum and I look forward to the studying the roots as well as the out-growths of the period. I trust that from this beginning there will be other interesting subjects that I will encounter. <shiny objects!>
