Gaza Dawn Prayer Massacre 2024

(part of Israel-Hamas War 2023-ongoing)

In the early hours of the morning of Saturday 10th August, Madrasah At-Tabi’een (downtown Gaza city), a school complex at the time hosting worshippers who had assembled for Fajr prayer, was struck by atleast 3 missiles.[1]

Atleast a 100 worshippers were instantly killed and dozens injured with some bodies catching fire. [2] [3]

The immediate statement from the Gaza government media office was “The Israeli strikes targeted the displaced people while performing Fajr (dawn) prayers, [which] led to a rapid increase in the number of casualties” whilst the IDF issued a statement saying “air forces struck a “command and control centre” that “served as a hideout for Hamas terrorists and commanders” and was also a shelter for the residents of Gaza City. [2]

The IDF provided no evidence for its claim whilst Hamdah Salhut, a correspondent for Al Jazeera remarked shortly after the incident that “We have not once seen evidence from the Israeli military, the Israeli army or the Israeli security services to back up these quite large claims that Hamas is using these civilian infrastructures for military purposes.” [4]

Anas Al-Sharif, a correspondent for Al Jazeera reporting directly from Northern Gaza, visited the site of the incident shortly after and commented “these were people who had gathered in the school, in the designated prayer area, to perform the obligatory dawn prayer when they were struck by the Israeli missiles. A huge massacre and an unfathomable scene (to witness), an unfathomable scene. [5]
