The UK Singles Chart is one of many music charts compiled by the Official Charts Company that calculates the best-selling singles of the week in the United Kingdom.[1] Since 2004 the chart has been based on the sales of both physical singles and digital downloads, with airplay figures excluded from the official chart.[2][3] Since 2014, the singles chart has been based on both sales and streaming; in 2017 it uses the ratio of 150 streams equivalent to one sale (not 100:1 as previously).[4]

Chart rules were altered again from 7 July to help new artists break through by limiting the number of tracks by the same artist allowed in the chart at the same time to 3. The streaming to sales ratio remained largely unchanged but for songs which have spent a high number of weeks in the chart the ratio is altered to 300:1.[5] This list shows singles that peaked in the Top 40 of the UK Singles Chart during 2017, as well as songs which peaked in 2016 and 2018 but were in the top 40 in 2017. The entry date is when the song appeared in the top 40 for the first time (week ending, as published by the Official Charts Company, which is six days after the chart is announced).

Two-hundred and sixty singles were in the top forty this year. Forty-five singles from 2016 remained in the top 40 for several weeks at the beginning of the year, or re-entered during the year. "Love My Life" by Robbie Williams, "On Hold" by The XX, "You Want Me" by Tom Zanetti featuring Sadie Ama, "Love Me Now" by John Legend, "After the Afterparty" by Charli XCX, "I Would Like" by Zara Larsson, "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" by Michael Bublé and "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" by ZAYN featuring Taylor Swift all first charted in 2016 but reached their peak in 2017.

Additionally, "Last Christmas" by Wham!, "Merry Christmas Everyone" by Shakin' Stevens, "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" by Wizzard, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid and "Merry Xmas Everybody" by Slade all returned to the chart at the end of 2016 and rose to a higher position at the start of 2017, having peaked in previous years.

The list of singles that charted in 2017 but did not peak until 2018 include "17 by Marc Kinchen, "Barking" by Ramz, "Beautiful Trauma by Pink, "Decline" by RAYE featuring Mr Eazi, "Feel It Still" by Portugal. The Man, "I Know You" by Craig David & Bastille, "I Miss You" by Clean Bandit, "Let You Down" by NF, "Man's Not Hot" by Big Shaq, "My Lover" by Not3s, "No Words" by Dave featuring MoStack, "River" by Eminem & Ed Sheeran and "Tip Toe" by Jason Derulo

Eighty artists have had multiple entries in the top forty in 2017 (as of 2 November 2017), with Ed Sheeran having the most entries (16). Songs that reached the top ten this year are featured here but also included in their own article. An asterisk (*) in the "Weeks in Top 40" column shows that the song is currently in the top 40.
