About

edit

I first attended Overdale Primary School then moved onto George Pindar School after this I did a two year course at Yorkshire Coast College studying multimedia. Originally studied films studies at Leeds Trinity University in 2011 but dropped out after a couple of months as this course wasn't right for me. I'm currently a second year at Hull University Studying Design for digital media, any queries or questions feel free to comment on my Talk Page. Thanks.

Current and Future

edit

After finishing my two year course at collage me and a friend bought a cheap car and decided to travel around Europe for six weeks. Also this year (2014) I have been accepted to travel to Africa on a ten week voluntary placement with the charity named Raleigh International

Topic Studying

Raid on Scarborough, Hartlepool and Whitby is the subject myself, User:Eeeeekaj and User:Alexhapps will be looking at. We will be building a page on HMS Lynx (1913) which was a English royal navy ship during the raid, 100 years ago.

Reflective Statement

Content

This is a reflective statement on my Wikipedia experience, my group decided to work on the subject of the raid on Scarborough, Hartlepool and Whitby bombardment which took place on the 16th of December in 1914. We looked at building a page on the HMS Lynx which was a Royal navy ship built in 1912.
As a team we split the page into three sections History, Service and wrecking to start with, I started by looking at the history finding out about the ships size details which I found by typing the name of the ship and the date it was built into Google. From there I was able to find all details of the ship such as size, weight and its yard number. From finding out more details such as these I was then able to add more information into the search bar to find out more information on the ship. By doing this I was able to find out that the ship its self was prone to a jamming problem in the steering which played a part in the other ships following the HMS Lynx in pursuit in the Scarborough bombardment . With this being a ship over 100 years old we were not able to find a huge amount of information on the subject. Also from looking at other related topics on Wikipedia I was able to find out the HMS Lynx's actual role in the Scarborough bombardment. I was able to find other information on another website but couldn't find where it was sourced from so decided against using it.
My user page contains a brief summary of myself and some information about what I have studded in the past and where, It also states what subject my group will be working on.
Understanding
edit
From being a wikipedia user I have learnt that creating a wikipedia page is not as simple as it seems, and from creating a page I have learned;
  • Bulleted list item

when inserting information onto a page make sure the headings are relevant and that the information is spelled right and also correcting sourced information.

  • Bulleted list item

Also ive learned how to insert hyper links to other wikipedia pages when possible in text, which in turn makes the subject you are covering more in-depth with details and easier to navigate through.

  • Bulleted list item

How looking at other peoples pages in edit mode can be very helpful because it can not just allow you to correct any information that may be wrong but also "borrow" any tables or other things from peoples pages.

All in all I feel I have a much greater understanding of Wikipedia and how it works and also much greater respect for it knowing all the work that can go into even the smallest of pages.
Issues
edit
An error we did as a group was making the page too quickly, rather than creating it in our sandbox and then converting it over once we had enough relevant information into a page. Because of us not doing this there were several articles deleted by other wikipedian's over the time as there wasn't enough information to start with. So these articles had to be redone when enough information was gathered.
Also another problem we came across as a team was the organisation, we used our talk pages on wikipedia to communicate but unfortunately we did not sort out the balance of work evenly enough. We decided to just use on talk page to contact each other to keep all the information in one site.
Also as a team we inserted a table of information which we borrowed from another page and changed the information to be relevant about the ship providing its name, when it was laid down and launched and other general characteristics. We did have some trouble with the table however, when trying to add an extra row or column to the table we found they could not be altered. Showing that this table was made only for the set amount of rows and columns and could not be changed, but we managed to fit all the relevant information in the columns provided.
Engagement
edit
From this experience I have experienced a lot of engagement on wikipedia by learning that creating a wikipedia page takes a lot of time and carefully placed information which has to be well sourced or it will no doubt be deleted by other users. Other wikipedians can actually be of great assistance with them working as a secondary reader and also editor , for example if we miss wrote something an onlooker could correct this mistake if we missed it.
I feel as a group we worked we experienced how to comuniacte with each other using talk pages but decided like i said before it was easier to talk on one page to keep all the information together.
Also I joined the "TeaHouse" to be amongst other wikipedia users that want to learn and experience more.
Overall I think Wikipedia is a very good website and wouldn't be the same if it wasn't for its dedicated wikipedian's who try to ensure that all articles are done to their best and also that all information is correctly sourced.
