History

edit

In 1953, under the leadership of Bishop Larose, C.S.C. of the Diocese of Chattogram, along with Father Picard and Father Aubé the school was established in the 5 No. Sadar Road area of Barishal city, under the name "Kishore Primary School." The primary goal was to provide modern and relevant education to Christian and other students residing in Barishal from various places, while also enriching the culture and heritage of Bengal. At the time of its establishment, the school had 80 students, and the first principal was Brother Cardinal, C.S.C.[1]

Around 1957, Kishore Primary School was relocated to Mother Teresa Prem Nibas on Nobogram Road, and the school's name was changed to "St. Paul's Primary School," where secondary education also began. At this time, Brother Gramo, C.S.C., served as the headteacher, and the student population grew to about 500. During this period, "Prabhati Balika Vidyalaya" was established on Sadar Road. Later, due to the need for more space for the growing number of students, classes 1 and 2 were merged with Prabhati Balika Vidyalaya, while classes 3 to 8 continued their studies separately under the name St. Paul's within the Prabhati premises. After the girls finished their school day, boys received their lessons at Prabhati Balika Vidyalaya.

A few years later, a proposal was made to change the school's name to a Bengali one. The name "Udayan," suggested by the school's teacher, Panchanan Ghosh babu, was unanimously accepted. Consequently, the school was renamed "Udayan Secondary School."
