Toulouse Regional Conservatory

The Toulouse Regional Conservatory is a state-approved, state-controlled arts teaching establishment (Direction générale de la Création artistique du ministère de la Culture et de la Communication), represented by the Direction régionale des Affaires culturelles (DRAC). It offers three specialties: music, choreography and drama. It is located in Toulouse (Haute-Garonne, France).

History edit

Founded on March 13, 1820, the Toulouse School of Music became a branch of the Paris Conservatoire in 1840.

In 1866, and until 1993, the school moved to rue Labéda (site of today's Théâtre de la Cité, no. 4), when it moved to the former Hôpital Larrey (listed as a historical monument), which it still occupies today.[1]

Diplomas awarded edit

The Conservatoire awards a Certificate of Musical Studies and a Certificate of Choreographic Studies, as well as Diplomas of Choreographic, Musical and Theatrical Studies.

Teaching edit

In the field of music, the Conservatoire offers instruction in strings (violin, viola, cello, double bass), woodwinds (flute, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, clarinet), brass (horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba) and polyphonic instruments (piano, accordion, guitar, harp, organ, percussion). Singing, songwriting and composition classes, as well as a workshop devoted to jazz and early music, are available to participants.

Classical, contemporary and jazz dance are all part of the conservatory's choreographic offering, as is a drama curriculum that also includes training in stage expression.

Partnerships edit

In partnership with the French Ministry of Education, the Conservatoire is part of a cycle of classes à horaires aménagés. Elementary schools Lakanal (music and dance) and Rangueil (choral singing), collège Michelet (instrument, voice and dance) and lycée Saint-Sernin all take part in this program.[2][3]
