Reoganizing the Wikibooks templates

Should we reorganize these and even merge them all? It would be easy enough using m:Parser_functions. --Swift 03:34, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Looks good, but the old one is needed too, because there are a lot of books using the colon convention. Cookbooks in particular has a lot of pages, many of which are linked from WP. --SB_Johnny | ^talk 11:43, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

The colon convention has been deprecated and those books should be changed to the new convention. Once that is done, the template is redundant. --Swift 16:08, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Yes, but unfortunately there are some grandfathered, and some namespaced.

Grandfathered? Namespaced? My understanding was that WB didn't like giving namespaces to books/projects since they aren't made for that purpose. Could you give some links/examples?

The subst:-s won't matter because they've been ... err ... subst:-ed. A template that is substituted doesn't reference the template any more. The contents of the template are simply inserted into the article once and for all so changing the template doesn't change the substituted content. --Swift 21:17, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Bold link

"Wikibooks" for our purposes are external links

Do not link to a wikibooks article simply because it is there. Wikibooks is essentially a free webhost for cranks. Only link to a "wikibook" if it is of a quality that would justify an external link to a non-wikimedia site. dab (𒁳) 11:41, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

Tricky one

I see -- this template assumes the "book name/chapter name" convention, although Robotics and a few other books have the "book name: chapter name" convention.

I suppose you could do it this way:

Atlas Shrugged and other non-copyrighted content

Strange formatting

If I try and paste the examples in the documentation

I get weird formatting

They only seem to work if I remove the spaces {{wikibooks|Chemical synthesis|Gallium}}--Salix (talk): 09:01, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

I fixed the examples. Ideally we should give names to the parameters, but for now this will work. Maybe someone with a bot can give this a fixup in the future. -SCEhardT 22:59, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

I still see the same problem Salix saw -- I copy and paste an example in the documentation:

and I expected to see two links (one with visible text "Fundamentals of Transportation", the other with the visible text "Estimating Models"). But what I actually see inside the pretty infobox is the the visible non-linked text

where I expected the first link (the second link is good).

Temporary workaround: If I put the first and second parameter on the same line like so:

the infobox looks OK. (In other words: I expected both boxes on the right to look the same, but they currently don't.)

It looks like something which can be fixed, I'm creates Template:Wikibooks/sandbox with a version which wraps all the arguments in {{trim}} and it seems to work as can be seen by looking at Template:Wikibooks/testcases. I'll leave it a bit before updating main template in case there is some hidden problem, I don't quite understand how the main template is coded. --Salix alba (talk): 18:52, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

This is often incorrect, there are many times pages, not just one. I suggest the wording is amended to say there is more. "Wikibooks has more on the subject of abc." SunCreator (talk) 12:23, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

bad example

Formatting

I've never understood why this template offsets the link onto a new line. Having looked through the code, it also appears that the code to do this is broken, as the div tag is never closed. I've created a sandbox which removes this code and just formats the link normally, like {{commons}} and other sisterlink templates. If there are no objections I'll get this synced. Template fails if param 2 is null but param 3 is non-null

On behalf of a user, I tried to link to a book but display an alternate title:{{wikibooks|Oberon||Oberon OS}}. This fails, because the template creates a URL with an appended slash. I created a kluge workaround (a redirect at wikibooks) and counselled the user to make his wikibook titles match his pagenames, but I still think the template should be fixed.
