WikiProject iconTemplate:User browser:Safari is part of WikiProject Userboxes. This means that the WikiProject has identified it as part of the userboxes system. WikiProject Userboxes itself is an attempt to improve, grow and standardize Wikipedia's articles and templates related to the userbox system, used on many users' pages. Even though I'd like to have a picture of the Safari icon in this template, unless there's a change to Wikipedia:Fair use (see #9 under "Fair use policy" in particular), we can't use it. This isn't about consensus or censorship, or anything like that. It's a legal issue, pure and simple, and unless that gets resolved, we'll have to live with text. I have to admit "Sa" isn't very descriptive, but honestly I can't think of anything better. –Abe Dashiell (t/c) 06:32, 10 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

I originally used the creator OSType sfri. I'm reinstating it. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 04:18, 17 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • The icon is already used on the Safari page. The same Fair use section cited above also states: "it is the policy of the Wikimedia Foundation to allow an unfree image only if no free alternative exists and only if it significantly improves the article it is included on." I believe that this meets that criterion. If not, I'll just design a picture of an apple with a swastika superimposed on it... CenozoicEra 04:38, 22 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
What would that prove? Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 04:49, 22 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Besides that I'm a total tool? Not much...  ;-) CenozoicEra 04:57, 22 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Could someone explain why exactly the fair use policy doesn't count in this case? I don't really understand the copyrights stuff of WP anyway (which is why I don't touch the Images namespace) so could you explain in a way that mortals would understand? Witty lama 10:18, 7 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm way late to this particular party, but here's the rationale. Fair use images can be used in articles because they are (ideally) being used specifically to explain the article. They can't be used in templates because templates in absolutely no way explain articles. That's the semi-dumbed down reason, but it's pretty spot-on from what I can tell. Let's keep it edit

Well, the copyright box for the original Apple Safari icon reads as follow:

This is an icon of copyrighted computer software. It is believed that the exhibition of icons
  • to illustrate or identify the computer software in question
  • on the English-language Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation,
qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Any other uses of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, may be copyright infringement. See Wikipedia:Fair use and Copyrights.

I have re-installed the original Safari icon today as it seems clear that it illustrates Safari and nothing else - Wikigi 22:27, 8 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • I have reverted your change. Per Wikipedia:Fair use criteria copyrighted images may not be used on templates or any other non-main namespace article. Please do not re-insert the image. If you have questions about this, I'd be happy to answer. --Durin 05:14, 9 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Small problem edit

For those who select the option "used to", the template reads like this : "This user used to contributes using Safari." Its need to be : "This user used to contribute using Safari." There are quite a lot of users having their template as one of their user boxes and it might create an embarrassing situation in future, so please change it. Cheers.
