Unused templates edit

In Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2016_December_26 a number of old Cityrail templates are discussed for for either rename or delete. Finally nearly two years later I have either renamed all such templates to Sydney Trains ones as suggested there or redirected them to other templates where more recent ones had been created. The one exception is this one which is not used and a more recent has not been found. Documenting this at this stage for future reference.Fleet Lists (talk) 06:07, 26 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Frietjes:In that log entry back in 2016 you were the one who suggested the renames. I only came across that in the past week or so and decided it was time to clean it all up but I have got one problem where I have done some renames such as with Template:Sydney Trains Line/Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line where I have looked at the items which still link to the previous name and found one which still links from Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line but can not find anything there. But then I found that it contains "Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line: Sitelink" in wikidata where I did find a link to the old name but when I try to change that to the new name it wont do it because it thinks there is no matching entry. I dont know why.Fleet Lists (talk) 09:02, 26 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
Fleet Lists, I'm not sure I understand. are you trying to move this template to a new name and it's not working? before you can change the wikidata, you first have to move the template/article to the new name. the wikidata should be automatically updated when you move things. Frietjes (talk) 16:58, 27 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Frietjes: Thank you. In the case of this template Template:CityRail Line/South Line I can not see any real pages still linking to it so there does not appear to be a reason to rename it and there does not appear to be a newer template to which it can be redirected so it could possibly be nominated for deletion.

But the problem I have is with templates Template:Sydney Trains Line/Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line, Template:Sydney Trains Line/Cumberland Line, Template:Sydney Trains Line/Airport and East Hills Line and Template:Sydney Trains Line/Bankstown Line which I have renamed from their Cityrail equivalents as suggested by you in Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2016_December_26. Taking the Cumberland line as an example page[1] shows there is still a Cumberland line entry pointing to the old Cityrail template which is believed to come from "Cumberland Line: Sitelink" [2] which still points to the old Cityrail template in route diagram. Yesterday when I tried to edit it, it came up with "no match was found" but today when I tried my cookies seem to remember that I tried this before and brings up the new name but wont allow me to submit it and then when I retype it, it again comes up with "no match was found". I must be missing something. I hope this clarifies things.Fleet Lists (talk) 23:23, 27 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Okay, I see what is going on. if the route diagram template does not have a wikidata page, you can't link it through that property on wikidata. the solution is to create a wikidata page for the template before it's linked. or, remove the link. I'm not sure if it's possible to move wikidata pages or rename them, but someone else might. Frietjes (talk) 12:58, 28 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Frietjes: [3] showed to me that such moves do take place automatically (as do the histories for the various wikidate pages) in wikidata which was the reason I was confused. But this morning I am even more confused as the four templates give me different results today. Bankstown Line [4] still contains Cityrail template name and I can not edit it. Cumberland Line [5] shows the new Sydney Trains template as do the Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line [6] and Airport and South Line [7] although no one has edited this one. And even though three now point to the Sydney Trains template all four still show an unidentified link from the line concerned to the old Cityrail template with a redirect such as in [8] Where do these links come from?Fleet Lists (talk) 04:10, 29 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
Fleet Lists, I think it's a cache issue. when I add the statement a second time it corrected the display for the first statement. I then removed the duplicate statement and all seems to be fixed? Frietjes (talk) 14:38, 29 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
Fleet Lists, as for the other problem, you need to updated the v-t-e links name after you move the template. Frietjes (talk) 14:40, 29 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Frietjes:Thank you - now seems to be all resolved. Very much appreciated. While doing the changes initially I also moved some similar CountryLink templates to NSW TrainLink ones - I have tidied those up as well as a result of all this. And now back to this unused South Line template. Since initially writing this I have found that the Inner West & Leppington Line does not contain one of these templates and that this template would ideally fit the job for this line with some changes to add the Leppington branch but I dont know how to do this - I will need to find someone who could do this. It would of course need to be renamed for this.Fleet Lists (talk) 04:03, 30 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Gareth:Any comments on reworking this unused template to suit the Inner West & Leppington Line which does not contain one, as mentioned in previous paragraph. It would need to have the Leppington branch added which I don't know how to do.Fleet Lists (talk) 04:11, 30 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) What exactly needs to be done? Useddenim (talk) 10:28, 30 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
As I see it the Leppington branch itself is already present but the Western Line branch between Granville and Merrylands would need to be extended to Harris Park and Parramatta. And looking at the article itself, the stations south of Glenfield to Campbelltown and Macarthur are no longer regarded as part of this line and hence should be deleted so that the Leppington branch would actual become the main part of the line in that area.Fleet Lists (talk) 11:32, 30 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
These complex RDTs make my head spin. I've done some work to update the template and simplify it so it's more like the other Sydney Trains templates.
Remaining issues:
Trains now stop at Flemington and Homebush stations (both are wheelchair accessible). Changing the station icons broke the alignment, so I left them alone.
The Parramatta branch needs to be added.
I think the whole Berala to Carramar section is confusing and should be removed.
These changes are too complex for me, but the template is now a bit closer to being up to date. Gareth (talk) 13:26, 30 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for making those changes. I have now renamed it although I made a mistake in at first. Will include it in the Line article later today when I get a bit more time. I agree with the Berala - Carramar section comments.Fleet Lists (talk) 22:55, 30 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
