Due to its public-domain status, the Schaff–Herzog Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge can be incorporated into any work, including Wikipedia. Wikipedia articles which derive from a Schaff–Herzog Encyclopedia article should bear this message:

This article includes content derived from the Schaff–Herzog Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge, 1914, which is in the public domain.

The message can be added by inserting {{Schaff–Herzog}} in the article.

If a no title= parameter is added this template now notes that it is required:

  • {{Schaff–Herzog}} returns
    •   This article incorporates text from a publication now in the public domainJackson, Samuel Macauley, ed. (1914). New Schaff–Herzog Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge (third ed.). London and New York: Funk and Wagnalls. {{cite encyclopedia}}: Invalid |ref=harv (help); Missing or empty |title= (help)

The red entry has a link to the section "External links" in the Wikipedia article Schaff–Herzog Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge. The section contains a list of volumes with their first and last entries, and URLs to versions of the volumes available on the net to help editors find an appropriate article title when one has not been previously provided as a parameter to the URL.

Which has removed the red link.

  • A fuller entry which includes a link to a url of the original article and the author of the original article {{Schaff–Herzog |title=Abraxas |url=http://www.archive.org/stream/newschaffherzog00unkngoog#page/n48/mode/2up|first=W.|last=Drexler}} looks like this:
  • If volume= is added so is the date of publication of the volume, and to make it a full citation add in the pages= parameter: {{Schaff–Herzog |title=Abraxas|url=http://www.archive.org/stream/newschaffherzog00unkngoog#page/n48/mode/2up|first=W. |last=Drexler |volume=1 |pages=16,17}}
