This is the first of several templates used to construct a Supreme Court of the U.S. decision summary box.

If the x US y citation does not work on Findlaw or one doesn't exist yet or you only have a Supreme Court number like 02-102, use {{SCOTUSRecentCase| instead. Arguments are similar.

Major overhaul

I'm proposing that this template be changed to merge Template:SCOTUSCase, Template:SCOTUSCase2, Template:SCOTUSRecentCase, Template:SCOTUSMajority, etc. and Template:SCOTUS YEAR-YEAR, etc.. I've created a template (Template:SCOTUSCase3) that merges the functions of each of these templates and would work with every Supreme Court case regardless of whether it has an official US volume and page. It also has optional hidden parameters that allow for multiple argue dates, reargue dates, superseded cases/laws, overruled cases/laws, and different combinations of concurrences/joins/dissents/etc.. To see this new template in action, I've changed the Dred Scott v. Sandford page to use the new template. It still needs some work, but without objection, I'm going to change the code on this page some time in the next week. Good work. This template has needed something like this for a while. Are you going to add all the SCOTUS Year templates to this template? I am sure by the end it would get pretty long. I am not sure if the size of the template really matters... I added the JoinConcurrence to each Concurrence and added dissents with one extra to allow for a dissent in part. Possibly more should be added just in case, but I haven't heard of any cases having more than five. Can't think of anything right now. I will lend some help with SCOTUSYear based on which way you think is best to proceed. I kind of like having everything in one Template. Also, it would make sense to move SCOTUSCase3 this template to take over this template. Articles will need to be recoded, but it will be worth it in the end.--Assawyer 07:22, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, my plan was to add all the SCOTUS YEARs sometime in the next week, any help would be fantastic. I don't think the size of the template matters, and my plan is to put all of the years into the SCOTUSCase3 template. Also, I'm going to move the code from SCOTUSCase3 to this template if there aren't objections. Luckily, many cases do not currently use the SCOTUSCase template [1]. If (or when) the code on this template is replaced, it won't be difficult to fix the code on the cases that currently use SCOTUSCase. And hopefully, the cases that don't use a template at all can be worked on after that. --MZMcBride 16:58, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

I beat you to the punch. I have completed all the remaining SCOTUS YEARs. I hope I have done it with no errors, we shall see... Agreed about switching over the Templates.
