Colons?

edit

Genuinely out of curiosity, why does this template use colons instead of what every other template does, namely | for separating parameters? When I first saw {{Ruby line|東: とう|京: きょう}} I was confused, whereas {{Ruby line|東|とう|京|きょう}} follows the standard convention across pretty much the entirety of Wikipedia. @Primefac: Did the confusion originate due to the bug now solved or is it still there? --Grufo (talk) 16:37, 28 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
No, I just don't get why it uses a completely different format than every other template on Wikipedia that I've seen. If there's a reason that's great, I just want to know what it is :-) Primefac (talk) 16:38, 28 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
We need to differentiate idiograms that have a ruby annotation from those that don't have one. How would you rewrite the following wikitext if there was no differentiation between the colon and the pipe sign: {{ Ruby line | 門: もん || 方: ほう }}? Here the idiogram in the middle does not have an annotation (i.e. (もん) (ほう) ). I guess it could be rewritten as {{ Ruby line || もん |||| ほう }}, but without differentiation wouldn't it become a hell keeping track of where each pair starts in very long lines? --Grufo (talk) 16:44, 28 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ah, yeah, I guess that makes sense. For something like {{ill}} which has similar pairings, there's usually a pretty clear designation between the (two letter) lang code and the actual link. Not quite as obvious in this case. Thanks! Primefac (talk) 16:46, 28 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the feedback! --Grufo (talk) 16:49, 28 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
