Citing different versions

edit

The RCHS updates this chronology periodically, typically annually, it is currently at version 5.04. Versions 5.01, 5.01-2 and 5.02 have numerous article citations but unfortunately the RCHS has decided to remove all the previous versions and redirect those web addresses to the latest version, there is an 80 page difference in the pagination of the various versions so page numbers cited in articles are likely to be wrong. Three of the earlier versions are however archived at archive.org so it is possible to change the citation to the archived version and 'fix' the incorrect numbering relatively easily. I think this will mean having different templates for each version, or allowing for different editions at different archive addresses, perhaps differentiated by year (similar to {{Clinker-Stations }}). This is outside of my current experience and any advice on doing this would be welcome. Nempnet (talk) 15:10, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure the Clinker type solution is the best here. I'd suggest that all the current uses of this template (about 220) get updated and baselined to this version which we reconfigure as v5.04 and add an archive link into the template . Then each time the RCHS update the website with a new version, we create another template and mark this one as superseded. Nthep (talk) 12:03, 28 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, that works for me. Unless there are other suggestions I'll work on doing the amendments, but it won't be until the end of January 2023. Nempnet (talk) 14:09, 28 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
I've added but hidden the archive link. This way when version 5.05 is introduced we can "switch on" the archive link but omit it while 5.04 is the current version. Nthep (talk) 16:40, 28 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Version 5.05 has been published by the RCHS, I've switched the archive link on! Nempnet (talk) 12:00, 17 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
I have made a start on updating the page numbers, but now the template is showing sfn errors as the original template was whitelisted to show the date as 2019, I am waiting for an amendment to the whitelist to be effected to carry on with the updates. Nempnet (talk) 16:24, 11 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
