Motivation for new diagram edit

This new diagram was motivated by the desire to modify the existing diagram in the Skandha article as follows:

  • to create a flow, congruent with the Pali Canon, showing that Consciousness arises from Form
  • to show the origins of Form, as indicated in the Sutta Pitaka, is from the Great Elements
  • while, as indicated in the endnotes of the Skandha article, Bhikkhu Bodhi has maintained that "nama" includes only Feelings, Perceptions and Formations (which is also logically consistent with the Twelve Nidanas relationship between "nama-rupa" and Consiousness); other authorities (e.g., the PTS Pali-English Dictionary) state that "nama" includes Consciousness; thus, I felt the need to replace the term "nama" (which in the existing article does not include Consciousness) with the Abhidhammic "cetasika."

Please free to discuss this further here or on the Skandha article's talk page at Talk:Skandha#Modification_of_.22Aggregates.27_Interaction.22_diagram. Thanks. Larry Rosenfeld (talk) 19:45, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
