Should this focus on Greenpeace, or should it focus on Amchitka or Cannikin? edit

While the Greenpeace page is probably the largest page associate with the image, it's not the focus of the Greenpeace page. It's a footnote in Greenpeace's founding. I think a description focussing more on Amchitka would be more appropriate. Kylesenior (talk) 12:44, 31 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Kylesenior: I focused the POTD on Greenpeace mainly because it was the first article listed at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/1971-CANNIKIN-2.jpg when you nominated this for featured picture status, so I assumed that the Greenpeace angle was deemed the most encyclopedically interesting aspect of this picture. Personally I would agree with that judgement, even if it was unintentional... the rules of WP:POTD do not require us to use the most specific possible article for the picture, only one in which it adds encyclopedic interest. As the incident that sparked the birth of Greenpeace, the image of the Cannikin warhead being lowered into place fits that requirement. Also, you've suggested that Amchitka should be the target, but if anything that's considerably less suitable. Amchitka is an island in the Aleutian islands, and the nuclear test is just one small aspect of that geographical feature. If we were going to be specific then Cannikin or W71 would be the appropriate targets... but personally I think Greenpeace is the best one from a reader perspective in this case.
