Show or ignore page number reference
editI have tried unsuccessfully to amend the template so that the absence of the page number parameter does not show the 'Page .' fragment. Doing so would allow elimination of templates {{OEB1}} through {{OEB6}}. Please see the history of my feeble efforts at Template:OEB/sandbox. Can anyone assist? Just do it! - I have modified the template and its documentation. The second parameter is now optional; it sets the "page" parameter of the {{cite book}}. I have removed the "pages" parameter, since it isn't supposed to be the total number of pages in the book - see Template:cite book/doc. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:07, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
Usage
editWell done. If we ever have articles with lots of references to one edition of the Official Encyclopedia, this seems appropriate after one full reference has been given by {OEB}.
- ^ Official Encyclopedia, p. 69.
The title of the Encyclopedia entry is useful to someone with another edition handy. For example (title presumed):
- ^ Frey, Richard L.; Truscott, Alan F.; Cohen, Ben; Barrow, Rhoda, eds. (1967). The Bridge Players' Encyclopedia. London: Paul Hamlyn. p. 69. OCLC 560654187.. "Cohen, Ben"
- ^ Frey, Richard L.; Truscott, Alan F.; Cohen, Ben; Barrow, Rhoda, eds. (1967). The Bridge Players' Encyclopedia. London: Paul Hamlyn. p. 69. OCLC 560654187.. ("Cohen, Ben")
- ^ Frey, Richard L.; Truscott, Alan F.; Cohen, Ben; Barrow, Rhoda, eds. (1967). The Bridge Players' Encyclopedia. London: Paul Hamlyn. p. 69. OCLC 560654187. — "Cohen, Ben"
May one of those be appropriate? --P64 (talk) 17:16, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
CS1 maintenace tracking.
editArticles using this template are added to Category:CS1 maint: Extra text: authors list. I have examined the template code and the cause is apparent. I assume the current output format was reached by some consensus process. Can anything be done to remedy this? Also, editor parameters should probably be used instead of authors. - @User-duck: Hi duck. Welcome and thanks for the question. I have no idea what your techno-babble means. Can you please re-phrase at a grade-four level? What is the problem and what is the apparent cause to which you refer? Thank you. Newwhist (talk) 17:59, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks, @Newwhist: for the prompt response. If I can get the link to work you can read the Wiki-babble for yourself, I do not want to attempt a transcription: Category:CS1 maint: Extra text: authors list (I found the trick) User-duck (talk) 19:40, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
- Here Is a typical line from the template;
| 1 = {{cite book|ref=harv|last1 = Frey|first1 = Richard L., Editor-in-Chief|authorlink1 = |last2 = Truscott|first2 = Alan F., Executive Editor|authorlink2 = Alan Truscott|title = [[The Official Encyclopedia of Bridge]]|edition = 1st|publisher = Crown Publishers, Inc|location = New York|page = {{{2|}}}|series = |year = 1964|doi =|lccn = 64023817|isbn = }}
- First, ", Editor-in-Chief", etc. are considered "Extra text" (the comma may trigger the determination).
- Second, the names are apparently editors and editor parameters, i.e.
|editor-last1=
, should be used. An "(ed.)" is usually added by the {{cite book}} template, but I believe there are cases were it isn't. (yes, it makes no sense to me either.) - I am capable of changing the template, but I am sure somebody wouldn't like it. User-duck (talk) 19:40, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
- P.S. I have the impression that unused parameters should be left out. I assume this is especially true for templates. User-duck (talk) 19:40, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
- @User-duck:. OK, I think I get the general gist of the issue. I will attempt some corrections but am pretty busy right now with other matters and may take a week or two to get them resolved. I will call upon you for help if I get totally bamboozled. Thanks again. Newwhist (talk) 21:14, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
