Space

edit

I don't know about that space after the colon. It looks better without it, just like "p.l.c." isn't "p. l. c.", "A.G." isn't "A. G.", and S.A. isn't "S. A.". - Jerryseinfeld 03:34, 24 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Category

edit

This template shouldn't automatically categorize pages under Category:Companies traded on NASDAQ. Doing so assumes that the template will only be included by pages about NASDAQ-traded companies, which is not the case (e.g. Charles Ergen, Hedge fund, and Babylon (program) all use this template and are miscategorized as a result). I've removed the auto-categorization for this reason. --David Iberri | Talk 18:53, May 17, 2005 (UTC)

That is a problem, but unfortunately your change has caused a far worse problem: Category:Companies traded on NASDAQ is now virtually empty. If you still see companies there, it's due to caching, they'll be dropped at some point. We need a bot to go through every page which uses this template and add the category. Rhobite 20:17, May 17, 2005 (UTC)
Actually I take it back. Please use Template:ndaq for the few special cases where you don't want the category added. I'm reverting this change since it creates a large amount of work repopulating the category. Rhobite 20:25, May 17, 2005 (UTC)
Whoops. I hadn't noticed Template:ndaq before. Thanks for reverting my change. --David Iberri | Talk 18:31, May 20, 2005 (UTC)

Should template:nyse be used on NASDAQ-listed stocks?

edit

There is a disagreement over whether Template:Nyse should be used on NASDAQ-listed stocks. Please see Template talk:Infobox Company. Rhobite 00:12, Apr 3, 2005 (UTC)

Parentheses

edit

I suggest that we do not include parentheses here, in order to better combine with similar templates. For example: (NASDAQ: MLEA, TYO: 8766) Shawnc 15:44, 2 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Bold should not be used

Stop inserting in the beginning of articles

edit

I do not think this should be put right after the company name. Wikipedia is not a stock trade website. Providing a link to Nasdaq is not that important. Put it in the infobox instead. --Apoc2400 (talk) 20:50, 17 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Which infobox? I don't see an infobox at Shutterfly. --68.0.124.33 (talk) 11:14, 23 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Dear Amalthea! Could you explain me why the name of the template is written like Nasdaq instead of NASDAQ?--Александр Мотин (talk) 20:46, 28 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • PS: Reason for this request: Александр tries in ru-wiki give name for templates as "Nasdaq", (also) because he see "Nasdaq" in interwiki. Your answer will not definitive for ru-wiki, but interesting. Comment in native, Russian language: Причиная этого вопроса в том, что Александр хочет дать название шаблонам Nasdaq, обосновывая это, в частности, тем, что он видит "Nasdaq" в интервиках. Ваш ответ не будет для рувики определяющим, но обоснование услышать интересно. -- AVBtalk 21:14, 28 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
    • PSS: It will be correct to say, that user AVB tries to rename the ru-Template [1], [2]. He hinted at my illiteracy. I told him that it is a service template and can be called Nasdaq. Originally, since its creation, the Template was called in ru-wiki Nasdaq like the other language analogs.--Александр Мотин (talk) 08:43, 29 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • I don't think there was much of a thought process behind that. It was created in late 2004 as "Nasdaq", with the redirect from {{NASDAQ}} following shortly after. And while we have the article at NASDAQ here, we also have Nasdaq Composite. The index seems widely called both "NASDAQ" and "Nasdaq", see google news.
In the end, I don't see that it matters for the template. Arguments can be made for both, and there are only few naming conventions for templates here at en-wiki.

Template adding non-article pages into article category

edit

{{editprotected}} This template is adding non-article pages into Category:Companies listed on NASDAQ - please add a {{main other}} template to prevent this, as I have done in other similar templates, for example Template:Lse). snigbrook (talk) 19:36, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

NASDAQ.com is using a new link format for quotes pages. The old format still redirects ok, but it's probably a good idea to use the current format in this template (symbol in lower case): Example: http://www.nasdaq.com/symbol/aapl

Jim nasdaq (talk) 23:02, 17 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Done. The template should not auto-cat, per WP:CAT, let alone the added complexity of having to chose the template. Rich Farmbrough, 00:41, 21 January 2012 (UTC).Reply
About 10% of the articles had the explicit cat, the rest I am adding now. Rich Farmbrough, 19:08, 21 January 2012 (UTC).Reply
And many were already incorrectly categorized by use of this template in navboxes. Rich Farmbrough, 20:40, 21 January 2012 (UTC).Reply

NASDAQ site unreadable with ad blockers

edit

I followed a link from this template today and the target site http://www.nasdaq.com/symbol/xxxx denied me access unless I disabled my ad blocker. A large fraction of Internet users today are using ad blockers routinely and our readers should not be unduly inconvenienced when following our standard links to stock information from company articles. There are many publicly available sites offering the same information without hindrance, so I suggest that Wikipedia point this template elsewhere, for example https://www.google.com/finance?q=NASDAQ%3AXXXX. Any comments? — JFG talk 14:47, 30 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Multiple Symbols, like the TSX's tmeplate

edit

I propose a version of this template that allows multiple symbols so we don't have to use {{Template:NasdaqSymbol}} anymore. This has been done with the TSX's template ({{Template:TSX|ABC.A|ABC.B}}) already. Thus, Liberty Media's lengthy Nasdaq syntax would be simplified to {{Template:Nasdaq|BATRA|BATRK|LMCA|LMCK|LXSMA|LXSMB|LXSMK}} from {{NASDAQ|BATRA}}, {{NasdaqSymbol|BRTRK}}, {{NasdaqSymbol|LMCA}}, {{NasdaqSymbol|LMCK}}, {{NasdaqSymbol|LXSMA}}, {{NasdaqSymbol|LXSMB}}, and {{NasdaqSymbol|LXSMK}}.
