Morse code representation edit

Currently, this template uses a plain text representation for Morse code. There is a template:morse for representing Morse code in a nicely standardized way, and I think this template should incorporate that template's functionality. Anyone have concerns about adding that functionality? VanIsaacWScont 13:34, 15 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • Okay, I've got a working version in the sandbox after figuring out that the string parser functions are now handled with the string module. I'm going to put in a bit more work to allow for other than default images taken from the pagename to be used for non-Latin script letters, and then roll this out in the next couple days. • I started investigating things like Japanese Semaphore and how it could be represented in this template, and concluded that the best course of action is to keep this template as is for the use of general Latin script letters, but build a more expansive and permissive version of the template at template:letter reps from the sandbox I was working on that can handle all the ins and outs of the alternative representations in other scripts. Eventually, I'll migrate this template to dependence on the general template. VanIsaacWScont 11:22, 18 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • I'm now rolling out the new architecture to depend on template:Letter reps. VanIsaacWScont 18:47, 19 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

BSL letter signs edit

@Vanisaac: I see the case for adding BSL letter signs, and potentially other representations, to A, etc. Would it be neater to incorporate them in {{Letter reps}}, adding a new parameter (or value of |lang=) when calling it from here to replace |lang=american? Certes (talk) 17:18, 30 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

The reason why it is lang=american is precisely because we had signs for the individual ASL, but not BSL, but we knew that was an issue. Probably need to expand this template's functionality to get letter other reps to be able to show more than one sign language. VanIsaac, MPLL contWpWS 23:15, 30 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

It shouldn't be hard to add a fifth panel to row two, so ASL and BSL can be shown alongside each other. Do we need other countries too? Fortunately, ASL covers Canada and west Africa, and BSL (BANZSL) letters work in Australia and New Zealand too. If we leave non-English-speaking countries to sister projects, I think that just leaves two others notable enough to have articles. South African Sign Language claims to have its own system but it looks like ASL to me. I won't notice Zambian Sign Language if you don't. Indo-Pakistani Sign Language is not based on English. @Vanisaac: I've rolled out the changed table to the basic letter pages AZ. It shouldn't affect other template users. Certes (talk) 12:18, 1 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
