Template talk:Latest stable software release/Google Chrome

Current version

An editor has changed this to 11, but my browser is still at 10 and says it is up to date. It is hard to imagine Google pushing an update on Sunday. Can anybody else comment? –CWenger (talk) 22:38, 27 March 2011 (UTC)

The beta build only updated to 11.0.696.16 on Monday according to the Google Chrome Releases blog. Google does update fast, but it's hard to believe it went to stable in less than a week. Listed order

One editor seems to think that the Windows version should be listed first. Normally on Wikipedia we list items in alphabetical order to avoid the appearance of promoting one product or operating system over another. Is there any reason not to list these in alphabetical order? - Ahunt (talk) 12:20, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Separation of Mac/Linux and Windows versions.

Pc-world added this separation, which I subsequently removed.

Reason being that:

• These templates should only have 1 call to {{LSR}}, not multiple.
• Parameter of latest_release_version takes a numerical value.

The problem with these is that scripts, gadgets and even websites (http://browsehappy.com, bug) use these as a data source. And even aside from that it makes it harder to re-use within Wikipedia as well.

So for now I reverted to previous status quo. For the future I recommend we do one of the following:

• Pick one platform and stick with the version of that. The build numbers only vary a bit, so it shouldn't matter much.
• Shorten the length of the version to the common parts (e.g. 28.0.1500).
• Use Chromium's version number instead.
• Create separate templates (e.g. Template:Latest stable software release/Google Chrome (Mac)).

As long as this template is or points to a template with just one LSR invocation and a valid numerical version value that doesn't contain unrelated wikitext markup, line breaks or other display stuff. Krinkle (talk) 21:06, 26 July 2013 (UTC)

About adding Chrome OS to the list

Through Chrome releases blog, I noticed that Chrome OS channels updates are listed separately, with sometimes different version numbers and release dates than other desktop OSs, so my question is should we add Chrome OS to this list ? Wiki layes (talk) 00:48, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

Only when it is different to the normal Linux release since Chrome OS is Linux and normally they are the same release version. - Ahunt (talk) 00:51, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

The difference now seems to concern only the dev channel, here's the cuurent dev channel update for desktop and the current dev channel update for Chrome OS, they are different, isn't this worth noting, in the Template:Latest preview software release/Google Chrome at least ? Ahunt: Saying that "Chrome OS is Linux" is rather simplistic. Chrome for Linux and Chrome for Chrome OS are very different. You would have quite a bit of trouble running Chrome for Linux on Chrome OS or Chrome for Chrome OS on a normal desktop Linux distro. It is also a subtle difference. The real question here is how big do you want the info box in the article at Google Chrome to get. That is where this is used. That's true. To be honest I would be okay with removing this template from the infobox entirely. It's not really useful information and it changes every month. --ChiveFungi (talk) 14:30, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

I'm adding Chrome OS to the list to reflect the difference in version numbers between Chrome OS and other OSs.

I still strongly believe it can be included here as it represents the version number for Google Chrome as a web browser and not the version number for the OS itself, with the latter called platform version in the Chrome releases blog, which by the way should be used instead of Chrome version in Template:Latest stable software release/Chrome OS.
