Template talk:Lang-mol

It seems Moldovan officially uses the Latin Alphabet in Moldova, except in Moldova's breakaway de facto but not de jure state, Transnistria, where Cyrillic is used. Just read http://www.moldova.md/ . It seems editing the template could inflame tensions, so I do so cautiously. I understand Latin Moldovan is basically Romanian but if we diplomatically have a word for Flemish (Belgian Dutch), I don't see diplomatically having a word for Moldovan as problematic. I believe our use of Cyrillic for the basic Moldovan tag should be deprecated. Just look at how it turned out on GUAM

The GUAM Organization for Democracy and Economic Development (Moldavian: (Cyrillic) GUAM; Azerbaijani: GUAM; Ukrainian: ГУАМ; Georgian: სუამი) is a regional organization of four CIS states: Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, and Moldova.

I hope youse understand. :)--Thecurran (talk) 21:57, 6 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Language templates should reflect names given to languages as found in linguistic sources. Moldovan is not a language, it is another name given to Romanian, by non-linguists. In every single linguistic classification, Moldovan is Romanian, nothing more. But usually the name Moldovan is not even mentioned. The fact that a part of the speakers prefer to call it another name is not relevant here, since Wikipedia is expected to reflect reliable sources, not the public. The name Moldovan is only relevant in articles where people's attitudes toward naming their language is of encyclopedic interest.

As such, this template should redirect to Template:Lang-ro or use the linguistically accepted name Romanian. In time a robot should scan the pages that link here and make the proper replacements. — AdiJapan 06:38, 17 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

The template was originally created by me exactly for those cases it the relevant version of Romanian is written with the Cyrillic alphabet;

Moldavian Soviet Encyclopedia (Romanian: Енчиклопедия советикэ молдовеняскэ, Romanian: Enciclopedia sovietică moldovenească) - was a multi purpose Encyclopedia of Moldavia, issued in the USSR. Moldavian Soviet Encyclopedia was printed in 8 volumes in Chişinău from 1970 to 1981.

here the relevant text is the Cyrillic one, which is the one appearing on the cover of the encyclopedia. This new version even gives the impression that Romanian is written with the Cyrillic alphabet, and should be reverted. Pages which incorrectly used lang-mo instead of lang-ro should be corrected, rather than this template change. --Explendido Rocha (talk) 17:18, 15 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

@Explendido Rocha:: Could it be renamed as Template:lang-ro-MD? Currently all the pages in Category:Lang and lang-xx using deprecated ISO 639 codes are related to Transnistria. --Error (talk) 17:15, 22 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
