Number of seasons

I think five looks better. -- Cyrius| 22:42, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Image

First of all, I believe the image in the template should always be the season track map. Secondly, I think this track map should always have a consistent name (<season>_map.png or {{PAGENAME}}_map.png). Thirdly, I uploaded all season track maps for the Atlantic (1851-2004 [1]) and Pacific (1995-2004 [2]) using this name (164 images total). Finally, I changed the template to automatically link to the track map. The next step then is to use this template in all the season articles (at least those for which we have track maps; others can use {{Infobox Hurricane Season nopic}}. Jdorje 07:52, 23 October 2005 (UTC)

A canonical system on naming is useful. However, a automagic link in the template is bad. When we work out how to best use the track program for seasonal tracks, they will not be the same as the NHC tracks so overwriting them would be inappropriate. That means a different name, that means a new tag.--Nilfanion (talk) 12:45, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

Problems with {{{region}}}

This needs to include the storm type as well as the basin. So it would be "Atlantic hurricane" or "Pacific hurricane" or "Pacific typhoon". Alternately we could have separate {{{region}}} and {{{type}}} (which would allow semi-automatic assembly of the year links).

 {{Infobox hurricane season|...
   |region=Atlantic
   |type=hurricane
   |year=2005
   |year1=2003
   |year2=2004
   |year3=2006
   |year4=2007}}

Though this might be overkill as it won't work with the collective season articles (1889 and earlier for the Atlantic). Jdorje 20:53, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

Rename

Next I think this needs to be renamed to use lowercase, i.e., {{infobox hurricane season}} (and similarly, {{infobox hurricane season nopic}}). I will also create a {{infobox hurricane season needed}}. Jdorje 22:46, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

Number of hurricanes

Question. This is infobox hurricane season. We have number of TSes, and number of MHs, but no number of HUs in the infobox? Also, did no one really not notice this earlier? – Chacor 05:38, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

MAJOR revision

The template has been significantly revised. All the old parameters listed above still work as a result of backwards-compability, but best practice is to use the parameters listed on the template page itself. Any suggestions for improvements?--Nilfanion (talk) 21:08, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Usage (deprecated)

Include this template in tropical cyclone season articles. Parameters include:

Parameter Type Description Example
{{{name}}} Optional Season's name; if not given the name will be the same as the page name so this is only needed for multi-season articles
{{{image}}} Optional The image name for the seasonal track; if not given assumes {{{name}}}.png or the pagename.png.
{{{first storm formed}}} Mandatory Formation date (generally tropical storm-strength) of first storm (full date) August 1, 2004
{{{last storm dissipated}}} Mandatory Dissipation date of last storm (full date) December 2, 2004
{{{strongest storm}}} Mandatory Strongest storm name and strength (pressure and wind speed). Generally just one storm should be listed; pressure is the sole criteria for determining strength when available. Units should be given in millibars, mph, and km/h (knots and inHg are unnecessary) Ivan - 910 mbar (26.87 inHg), 165 mph (270 km/h)
{{{total storms}}} Mandatory Total number of storms (tropical storm strength or higher). This should correspond exactly to what is in the best-track data. Depressions are not counted but subtropical storms are. 15
{{{major storms}}} Mandatory Total number of "intense" or "major" storms (Category 3 strength or higher). 6
{{{total damages}}} Mandatory Total damages from the season. The entry should give units (monetary units and the year) $42 billion (2004 USD)
{{{total fatalities}}} Mandatory Total number of people killed (directly and indirectly) during the season. Use a range of values if necessary. 3,132+
{{{basin}}} Mandatory The basin this article covers. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Tropical cyclones for a list of basins. Atlantic hurricane
{{{fiveseasons}}} Mandatory Links to the next and previous 2 seasons around this one. In most cases this is just the previous 2 years and the following 2 years, with the current year in the center. For multi-season articles it takes a little more thought. 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006

These instructions are now deprecated, but all usage of them will still work. See the Usage description on the Template page itself for the current procedures.--Nilfanion (talk) 21:34, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Large gap at top of articles

This template is producing a large gap of several lines at the top of the articles where it is transcluded (the same gap also appears on the template page itself). I've gone through and attempted to figure out what is producing this gap and fixed one thing, but it's coming up empty. Any ideas what's causing this spacing issue? SchuminWeb (Talk) 15:42, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

I think its something to do with the total depressions or total disturbance field, as when i add that field to articles i write it the gap doesnt appear.Jason Rees (talk) 15:51, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

Possible autogeneration functionality for adjacent years

On {{Infobox tornado year}}, I added autogeneration functionality for adjacent years. I was thinking that it wouldn't be too difficult to replicate this functionality with {{Infobox tropical cyclone season}}. The primary issue is that so many transclusions of {{Infobox tropical cyclone season}} on season articles already have a filled |five_seasons= parameter. Perhaps a bot could be used to remove the parameter from articles and replace it with a |year= parameter? In any case, I will see if I cannot get this to work in the sandbox. Dustin (talk) 19:21, 19 January 2015 (UTC)

This is a feature i have wanted to implement for years, but was unsure how to do it and make it suitable for the SHEM.Jason Rees (talk) 22:58, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
My sandbox test has shown promising results; I believe I know how to implement this functionality. The only problem I know of with Northern Hemisphere seasons, at least yet, is the amount of repetitive coding. However, this eliminates the need for the |five_seasons= parameter, which is a beneficial change. Just as you mentioned, there are still some problems with Southern Hemisphere seasons, but I'll see if I can't fix them. Dustin (talk) 00:23, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

converting to use Template:infobox

So I have converted the template to use {{Infobox}} as at least 99% of all infoboxes do. That change has been reverted. So I would like to discuss it here. The sandbox has the code for the conversion and the testcases page shows the differences. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 20:14, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

@Pigsonthewing and Frietjes: as others active in converting to {{Infobox}}, would be great if you could weigh in here. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 20:15, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
Sigh yet again a member of WPTC has reverted a member of the Wikipedia community trying to improve the infobox because he basically doesn't like the change. Though I have to note that he is also thinking that the consensus at the TFD means that no changes to the infobox can take place. Personally I am happy with the change though, I would prefer to see the 5 seasons before the related articles.Jason Rees (talk) 21:06, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
@Jason Rees: Thanks for the feedback. Couple of things. First... What TFD are you referring to? Second, regarding the 5 seasons. It really isn't that big of a thing to move it. The reason I put it at the bottom is that literally every infobox I have ever seen as the "next" and "previous" navigation as the very last thing. That is FAR from a deal breaker though. Easy to swap that. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 21:20, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
@Zackmann08: First this is just me interpreting @MarioProtIV:'s edit summary but he wrote that the "Consensus on the page was to not do anything, now you made a big mess to the other articles." Now, I presume he means the TFD that you opened the other day, but that was to do with Infobox hurricane small and infobox hurricane rather than infobox hurricane season.Jason Rees (talk) 21:51, 18 January p(UTC)
@Jason Rees: Yea I hear ya. That is the only TFD I see and it was a discussion to merge two other templates. The edits I made here have nothing to do with those 2 templates. Also, this change didn't merge anything... So I'm going to go ahead and revert that edit until MarioProtIV can explain what they are talking about. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 23:06, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
I support conversion to use {{Infobox}}. The edit summary when Zackmann08 was reverted was "Revert undiscussed changes – Consensus on the page was to not do anything, now you made a big mess to the other articles". No description or explanation of "big mess" has been offered. No such consensus exists, or can indefinitely exist, and "undiscussed changes" is not a reason to revert. I checked the comparison at the /testcases page, and I don't see any problems with the new version. In some ways, I think it's actually an improvement. Dustin (talk) 23:24, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

@Zackmann08: @Dustin V. S.: Well I mean the template just looks fine, but it's more neat than the older one. Well you should've left a discussion about this first because I was really shocked when I came back editing. Also should we add ACE Index in there too? Typhoon2013 (talk) 00:51, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
I agree the new version is a bit neater. Yes, the change came from a non-WPTC editor, but if it's an improvement, so be it. YE Pacific Hurricane 00:58, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
I just reverted the most recent malformed experiments which put the transcluding articles in Category:Pages using duplicate arguments in template calls. please use the sandbox for experimentation. 98.230.196.215 (talk) 01:06, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
@MarioProtIV: I don't know what you are trying to do but YOUR edits are now disruptive as you have broken the template multiple times. If you wish to experiment please use the sandbox. That is what it is there for... --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 01:38, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
I've been using it for the last 15 minutes to re-align "Strongest storm" to its own section under the "Seasonal boundaries", and I'm close to making it work. --MarioProtIV (talk/contribs) 01:40, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
@MarioProtIV: It is interesting that you still have not replied to my message or explained how I made a "big mess" of things. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 01:41, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
That was a misunderstanding, I thought the template you'd opened a discussion about before, not this one. My bad. --MarioProtIV (talk/contribs) 01:43, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
@Zackmann08: @MarioProtIV: Perhaps add the ACE (if you know what it is) in the template. It gives more info about the storm's statistics. Typhoon2013 (talk) 08:25, 22 January 2017 (UTC)
Never you guys mind. I've already added it in. The ACE now gives more info of how much energy the cyclone(s) have totally accumulated during a season.Typhoon2013 (talk) 08:37, 22 January 2017 (UTC)
