Parameters for buddhist monasteries edit

| sect
| religion
would important ones to specify Mahayana Buddhist, Vajrayana Buddhist etc (and not just the name of the order). Also it would be really nice if specifying a religion changed the color, like Template:Infobox religious building. If you specify "buddhism" then the infobox changes to saffron-orange Mualphachi (talk) 17:31, 30 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Alt text edit

Is there any way of adding alt text to the image in the infobox? This now seems to be a requirement for FA.--Peter I. Vardy (talk) 20:43, 5 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

UK-centric edit

Why is this template so UK-centric? I wanted to use this for Italy and then found out that "disestablished" links to Dissolution of the Monasteries which seems to be about the UK exclusively and therefore not very applicable as a link for an Italian monastery. Normally these kinds of templates are not so unnecessarily country-specific. --Morn (talk) 18:01, 11 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, I've got a slightly different problem with the Tonbridge Priory article. The Priory was disestalished before the dissolution of the monastries by Henry VIII. Maybe the template can be tweaked to turn the link off. Mjroots (talk) 15:18, 15 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps there should simply be an extra template parameter to suppress the link... --Morn (talk) 15:24, 15 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
P.S. I've added the flag nodislink to the template; use it as "| nodislink = true". --Morn (talk) 15:38, 15 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, that is working just fine. I'll expand the article in the next few days. Mjroots (talk) 18:22, 15 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Of course you could also set it to "false" and it would still do the same thing, because it just tests for a non-empty string. So I think I should update the documentation to make that more clear... --Morn (talk) 18:40, 15 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Just looking at this while working on a Russian monastery, and was wondering if it would be better to link to the more general Suppression of Monasteries? While in some ways it better to find some way to nationalise that link, I suspect that a more general link might be both easier for you AND less complicated for editors to remember...

Expand the infobox edit

It's been a while since this template has been updated. Is there a way it can be expanded to be more comprehensive e.g. a map, history and architecture section, like the Template:Infobox church?

What about it looking a bit like this:

<<Name and Image>>
| name =
| full name =
| image =
| image_size = new
| alt =
| caption =

<<Site>>
| map_type =
| pushpin label position= new
| pushpin map alt = new
| pushpin mapsize = new
| map caption = new
| latd =
| latm =

| remains =
| public_access =
| other_info =

What do you think? Pjposullivan (talk) 18:42, 11 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

I can do this for you, but first please indicate which parameters are new, or changed. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:18, 15 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
I've marked what is new - just taken labels from Template:Infobox church. Pjposullivan (talk) 18:59, 15 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
I've belatedly made a start on this. I'm, striking the word "new" as I go. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:18, 14 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

mother edit

I am not sure what this refers to, any help would be appreciated as I am adding this to the Fossanova Abbey. speednat (talk) 18:10, 14 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

It refers to the mother house of a monastery, meaning, which monastery setup the existing one, so which monastery sent monks to Fossanova to create it. Pjposullivan (talk) 18:52, 14 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
yes that helps speednat (talk) 23:50, 14 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Infobox historic site edit

Another infobox that can be used in some situations. I posted up on WP:museums but maybe this is a better location. Obviously there are times when one works and the other doesn't, but there are also times where either will work and there lies the problem. A judgement call, a personal preference, a bit of chance is all that decides which infobox gets used in many situations. There needs to be some sort of discussion. I will copy this post over on to infobox historic site speednat (talk) 18:44, 14 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Coordinates issue edit

I can't seem to get the title coordinates to display, on Derby Black Friary. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:13, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

fixed. Frietjes (talk) 16:09, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
An undocumented parameter (I should have checked the source code) Thank you. I've now documented it. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:09, 14 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Website? edit

On other infoboxes, websites for particular organizations or venues are featured at the bottom of the template. Is it possible to add this to this current template? Twillisjr (talk) 21:03, 8 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Gender appropriate? edit

I am trying to edit an infobox for an abbey of nuns. I hesitate, however, to place the abbess' name in the field for abbot. Is there some way to be able to make the title match the monastic superior's gender? Daniel the Monk (talk) 01:15, 27 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Daniel the Monk, use |abbess= Frietjes (talk) 17:47, 5 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

New foundations edit

The template has a field to show the motherhouse which founded a particular monastery. It seems worthwhile to include a monastery's own new foundations, called daughter houses in the infobox. How can one add that field? Daniel the Monk (talk) 22:42, 18 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Mapframe maps? edit

{{Infobox building}} and {{Infobox shopping mall}} have both recently been updated to automatically show dynamic mapframe maps by default. I am proposing to similarly show such maps by default for this template, with the same optional parameters to adjust the size, frame center point, initial zoom level, and marker icon; and to similarly allow the mapframe map to be turned off using |mapframe=no. See Template:Infobox building#Mapframe maps and Template talk:Infobox building#Change to the map parameter so Kartographer works for further information. (FYI: I'm making similar proposal for other buildings infobox templates) - Evad37 [talk] 15:36, 31 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Evad37 so many years later, I happened to stumble upon this :) and used the implementation I found in {{Infobox ancient site}}. It's off by default, but I hope it's a useful improvement nonetheless. --Joy (talk) 14:04, 1 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Make embeddable in other infoboxes edit

There are many ways to categorise monasteries using the available infoboxes such as:

See Wikipedia:List of infoboxes for the full list. Obviously these categories overlap and sometimes a building/place has many functions. Monasteries are no exception. One popular solution is to make infoboxes embeddable in one and other to avoid duplication of fields and to capture multiple functionalities. This way wikipedians can mix and match as needed. Two questions:

  1. Is this infobox embeddable and if not can it be made so?
  2. Would a natural parent infobox for a monastery be then a Template:Infobox religious building or just Template:Infobox building? This could be a guideline to other wikipedians but as I said users will be free to mix and match.

Infobox Heading - Colours based on Denomination edit

The universal use of Anglican pink for the headings of this infobox should be changed to the colour of the Monastery's denomination, in accordance to the denomination colours on Template:Infobox church/denomination. For example, It looks ridiculous to see Saint Catherine's Monastery on Mount Sinai with the Anglican pink coloured headings instead of the Eastern Orthodox golden yellow (#FFCF00). This could also be done for Monasteries of other world religions too.

Auto-generated link to Wiki Commons in infobox edit

I've noticed that the infoboxes on ruwiki automatically add/include a link to the media-category on wiki commons on the subject of the article. An example for such an infobox is the Russian monastery infobox at ru:Шаблон:Монастырь. It generates a link at the bottom of the infobox that says "Медиафайлы на Викискладе" (trans.: Media Files on Wiki Commons). You can find an example of this in the article ru:Сякюсн-Сюме.

Can something like this be added to this English infobox template? Nakonana (talk) 15:39, 5 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

The relevant code for this might possibly be found here: ru:Шаблон:Достопримечательность Nakonana (talk) 15:47, 5 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Actually, the following might be the relevant code where the template pics the commons-category based on p373 or, alternately, (if I'm reading the code correctly) on coordinates (but I'm really not code-literate enough to tell for sure). I'm adding translations to the code ("Карточка/Викисклад/Infobox/WikimediaCommons" refers to ru:Шаблон:Карточка/Викисклад):
