Usage edit

Here is the usage:

<!-- Begin Infobox horse. The text of the article should go AFTER this section. See: -->
<!-- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template talk:Infobox horse -->
<!-- for full explanation of the syntax used in this template. -->
{{Infobox horse
|name =
|image =
|image_caption =
|features =
|altname = <br>
|nickname = <br>
|country =
|group1 =

<!-- End Infobox horse info. Article begins here -->
Summary of usage
  • All parameters are optional except for name
  • All parameters for each group (1, 2, etc.) are required if any are used at all.
  • Altnames (official variants of names) and nicknames (what people fondly refer to the breed as) have to be on one line separated by <br> .
Usage details
  • name is required; all other variables are optional.
  • All variables for each group are required if any are used at all (for example, group1 and std1). If a value is not available, set it to some value (e.g., a question mark).
  • Up to 6 different groups (organizations) and their standards can be specified.
  • If the breed is not recognized by any major organization, set the status variable to notrecognized.
  • If you want to specify multiple entries for the altname or nickname variables, these must be on one line with <br> separating them.
  • The comments at the beginning and end don't affect the appearance of the table but please always include them to help newcomers understand what's going on when they edit the page.

Infobox variables edit

  • name: Breed name as in article title.
  • image: The name of the image (leave off Image:)
  • If you upload a new photo, make sure that both source and copyright are OK (e.g., name of photographer and GFDL).
  • Use the best breed photo available for the infobox image.
  • image_caption: A caption that describes the image.
  • Include a caption that mentions unique characteristics of the breed and whether the horse is nonstandard in other ways; Wikipedia standard now seems to be for full sentences, but don't repeat the whole breed chaacteristics section from the text. Only mention coat color if a unique characteristic (such as if all representatives are predominantly one color).
  • altname: Other names by which the breed is known by English speakers.
  • To specify more than one name, you must specify them all on one line separated by <br>
  • nickname: Common nicknames
  • These are shortened names that aren't an official breed name but that are in common use by owners or breeders of these horses.
  • As above, to specify more than one name, you must specify them all on one line separated by <br>
  • country: Country or countries of origin, preferably at time of origin to avoid squabbling over current political boundaries.
  • status: Set to extinct if the breed is extinct. Set to notrecognized if the breed is not recognized by any major authority. Otherwise leave blank or omit.
  • notes: Notes about the breed recognition or standards.
  • Breed standards:
  • For each group (1 through 6); all options are required for each group.
  • group1: The name of the organization that recognizes or defines the breed.
  • std1: The URL to the breed standard.

Forked to Template:Infobox horse breed/doc edit

Template:Infobox horse breed/doc was created 22 March 2010 by someone who has not yet edited this talk page, while these usage notes were started on 17 January 2006, and were pretty much complete by the time the formal template documentation was started. I think we should merge this section into the formal documentation. Wbm1058 (talk) 22:30, 6 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

I'd ask @RexxS: and @Justlettersandnumbers: about it, they both did some cleanup of the documentation to make the infobox work better. I don't know much about syntax, but whatever they did worked better and I'd hate anything to be messed up. The box in 2006 kind of sucked. Montanabw(talk) 23:18, 6 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
Sure, anything that's stale here shouldn't be merged. But I think the advice here about the country parameter is still good. Wbm1058 (talk) 00:05, 7 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
I've cleaned up, updated and merged in the documentation from this talk page. Let me know if there's any problem. --RexxS (talk) 19:25, 7 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Formatting change edit

Can you give me an example of where it was messing things up? The purpose was to get rid of the unwanted "Breed standards" title in instances where there is no information under it, as in Polish konik.--Kotniski (talk) 11:54, 13 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

We sort of made a deliberate decision somewhere in the dawn of time (i.e. before I came on board at wikipedia) to leave it there so that people would be encouraged to add that section as the article grows. I suppose it might make more sense to rename it something like "Breed Organizations" though, because that seems to be inevitably what shows up there. The traits of the breed are usually listed in the "features" section. To see one that is all filled out, compare Arabian horse. You make a point that the template probably needs an update. Montanabw(talk) 21:33, 14 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
To me, certainly, as one who came to the Konik page effectively as an unsuspecting reader, it looks very odd to see these words on the infobox with nothing underneath them. It is very common for infoboxes to have unfilled parameters, and normal treatment is to omit the line or section for those parameters completely. I don't see why this one should be any different. Those involved in the project already know they can add this information.--Kotniski (talk) 10:21, 15 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
I see your point. You may be right on that one. I just want to be sure the infobox is really simple in layout so all people have to do is "plug and chug" -- All those brackets scared ME! LOL! (Of course, even two plus years into wikipedia, I still don't really "get" templates, even though I use them--LOL!) Montanabw(talk) 02:35, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
So no objection to my re-making my changes? I'm pretty sure it doesn't break anything.--Kotniski (talk) 07:59, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
OK, but make it really idiot-proof so people can still add the breed std stuff and not get confused by too many brackets! LOL! {}} Or maybe expand the instructions. Check a couple of articles like Appaloosa or Suffolk Punch to see the real-life versions, if you want. Montanabw(talk) 09:43, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Shouldn't affect those using the template - the syntax remains exactly the same, only the appearance is altered. I'll make the change then, and I'll look at some articles like the ones you mention to be sure that it's not messing up.--Kotniski (talk) 09:55, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Added a link to Horse breed, which at present is a redirect to List of horse breeds, but hopefully soon Horse breed will be an article. See Template talk:Equine and Talk:List of horse breeds. --Una Smith (talk) 06:36, 27 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Removed link as it was in a poor location and there is no consensus on the issue. List of horse breeds would be the proper link, as the idea is to allow people to navigate to articles about various breeds of horses. Montanabw(talk) 16:51, 29 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

New discussion edit

A legitimate question has been raised at a breed article whether we should incorporate additional elements of Infobox animal breed to this template. To me, some parameters in that infobox do make sense to add, but others seem more useful for meat-type livestock and some parameters here do acknowledge the use of horses as companion animals as well as livestock. Montanabw(talk) 00:51, 22 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

From the WPEQ talk: A couple of years ago, almost all the animal breed infoboxes were updated to use infobox animal breed as a basis. For some reason, infobox horse breed got left out of that. I've experimented a bit at Kathiawari to see what an updated version might look like, and now invite comment from others. The advantages that I see are the inclusion of parameters for conservation status, distribution, height, weight and coat colour(s), and the possibility of adding several different breed standards without endless repetition of "Breed standards". I don't have any opinion on the aesthetic merits or otherwise. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 16:41, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

Distribution would be hard to figure in some cases, but I like adding height, weight and color and think those would really improve the box. White Arabian Filly Neigh 23:09, 21 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

I do agree that adding several different breed standards in one place would be an excellent improvement and support that idea wholeheartedly. I think a height/weight parameter would be useful, but a single line for each and the range, not with the male/female breakdown, not only because it would bloat the infobox, but also because horses have relatively little sexual dimorphism, plus many breed standards don't break it down by sex anyway (the FAO does, but not really sure who else, and the FAO is doing a generic livestock thing with that, IMHO). Montanabw(talk) 00:58, 22 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I agree on there not being that much of a weight/height difference between the sexes with horses like there is with dogs and other animals, so one line should work for each. We might even be able to make weight and height appear on the same line on top of each other like birthdate and birthplace appear together in people articles. I'm thinking that Template:Infobox dog breed has a neat way of listing multiple breed standards that we can copy, and we can maybe steal a few things from that one as well as the one named above. I could add additional parameters if this isn't protected. White Arabian Filly Neigh 22:39, 22 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
I guess the person who started this discussion wants it back at WT:EQUINE, so will move this back there. Montanabw(talk) 21:01, 23 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

duplicate categories edit

I have changed

</includeonly><noinclude>documentation</noinclude>

to

</includeonly><noinclude>documentation</noinclude>

since we don't need to add the same categories twice. if you don't understand why these two do the same thing, please ask and I can try to explain it to you. Frietjes (talk) 13:55, 5 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

I have no idea why they are even added once, but it is clear that it matters for some reason, so carry on. Montanabw(talk) 00:16, 20 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
