As party vote works differently to the first-past-the-post election for members, I think giving only the “Party vote winner” is a mistake. With the opportunities this new template affords, we could actually do something more useful, like include a bar to show the distribution of party votes. See {{Stacked bar}} or {{Composition bar/advanced}}, which would give outputs like those to the side (using data from Napier).

Personally, I think Stacked bar is preferable, though I would like to have the labels either displayed smaller, or displayed on hover as title-text, possibly with percentages. (Either of these changes would have to be implemented at that template.) — HTGS (talk) 03:52, 18 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

MP Salary

edit

I have disabled the Salary item for now, for a few reasons. First, I’m fairly sure that the default number (for an ordinary member) isn’t actually correct, as the wrong number from that article was copied, and it also updated in June. Second, we cannot list the ordinary member salary at every electorate; we will have to make sure that each member has his or her salary checked. So keeping the salaries unlisted for now will allow us to roll out the infobox much quicker than if we had to check and fill the individual salaries. At the point we re-enable it, I suggest the template also be given a checkbox to enable (and disable) each page, to allow for editors to say “I just don’t know this member’s salary at this point”. OR, when we re-enable it, we make it much more automatic:

Per the legislation salaries for ordinary members, and others, will continue to update over time, and this should probably be built into this template to avoid having to update it every year. But at that point, we should probably just build out a table (as its own template, or as a sub-page of this one) that is kept up to date on each MP’s various responsibilities and spits out true and trustworthy salaries across the board. To do this, we would need to have the means and interest to keep the thing updated—I know I don’t—because it would not take long for it to fall well out of date if the one or two people who manage it forget to keep up wth it; though probably still less out of date than the individual pages would be if all had to be manually checked and updated.

Beyond all that, arguably, salary data for MPs just isn’t that necessary for the electorates pages. I could certainly see it being more valuable for the pages of the MPs themselves, but I really just don’t have strong feelings one way or another for this template. — HTGS (talk) 02:53, 21 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
