SA Naval ensign prior to 1994 is missing - please can someone add it, as the template is locked. Socrates2008 (Talk) 10:25, 7 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

What is the image name? — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 17:01, 7 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Not sure what you mean? There's no template for the various pre-1994 Naval ensigns. This site has examples of the correct legacy flags. Usage should be like this: {{navy|South Africa|1928}} {{navy|South Africa|1946}} {{navy|South Africa|1952}} {{navy|South Africa|1959}} {{navy|South Africa|1981}} Socrates2008 (Talk) 10:54, 18 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I still can't help you based on this information. I'm not going to upload non-free images from an external website for you. If the images are on Wikipedia or on Commons, tell me the image name and I will add them to the template. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:49, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
There exist images in the Commons for the 1952 and the 1981 ensigns. Please add them. Cplakidas (talk) 15:44, 5 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

SVG version of SAAF ensign edit

{{editprotected}} I've produced an SVG version of the Air Force ensign, at Image:Air Force Ensign of South Africa.svg. Its copyright status is also more certain than that of the PNG version that is currently in use. Could an admin please replace the PNG version with the new SVG version? All that needs to be done is to change

| flag alias-air force = SAAF flag.png

to

| flag alias-air force = Air Force Ensign of South Africa.svg

Thanks, htonl (talk) 21:07, 3 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Update request edit

The army template has been updated but not the airforce one. I found the ensigns for the airforce on the South African Air Force page. Would it be possible to update the template so that similar to the navy and army ones, the airforce will display correctly:

Sorry, what does this have to do with this template? None of these things are mentioned in the contents of this template. - htonl (talk) 21:18, 19 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

1910 edit

{{editprotected}} Could an admin please change the 1910 alias to use File:Flag_of_South_Africa_(1910-1912).png and add File:Flag_of_South_Africa_(1912-1928).png as a new alias for 1912? Orange Tuesday (talk) 20:04, 18 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

SVG Flags edit

There are new SVG versions in Wikimedia Commons for the flags of 1910-1912 (File:South_Africa_Flag_1910-1912.svg), 1912-1928 File:South_Africa__Flag_1912-1928.svg, and the Naval ensign from 1952 (File:Naval_Ensign_of_South_Africa_(1952-1981)-2.svg). They should be updated to template:country data. (Gardner Fox (talk) 16:23, 12 September 2010 (UTC))Reply

Army Template Suggestion edit

I am using the following:

Both work in that they include a National flag. This should surely rather be the Army flag similarly to how the Naval Ensign is displayed. The Current Army Flag is File:SANDF_Army_Flag_Current.gif. In addition, the link created by the army template is incorrect, but I guess I need to address that on the template's talk page. BoonDock (talk) 13:43, 1 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

I have changed both the (current) army flag and the army link and also created a redirect from South Africa Army. SiBr4 (talk) 14:34, 1 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thank you SiBr4. When I have found or created the SADF flag I'll be back :-) BoonDock (talk) 21:42, 1 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
The flag I was looking for is File:SADF_Army_Flag_1973-1994.gif — Preceding unsigned comment added by BoonDock (talkcontribs) 22:04, 1 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
OK. I'm back. the SADF should use File:Ensign_of_the_South_African_Defence_Force_(1981-1994).svg and the template should possibly look something like
{{military|South Africa|1981}} or {{military|South Africa|SADF}}

I need to still find/create the others. In my opinion, there should be

  • military|South Africa|UDF
  • military|South Africa|SADF
  • military|South Africa|SANDF

as well as the same for Army and SAMS/SAMHS BoonDock (talk) 21:55, 1 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

{{Military}} is not a flag template but an infobox. With a |flag alias-army-1981=... variant, like I just added, {{army|South Africa|army-1981}}  South African Army works, as do general templates: {{flag|South Africa|army-1981}}  South Africa. If for the current army flag SANDF was used as alias instead of army, {{army|South Africa}} would display the national flag, so it's better for all variants to use the army format. SiBr4 (talk) 10:07, 3 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
I just changed {{army/core}} so {{army|xxx|yyy}} invokes the army-yyy variant if defined; this means {{army|South Africa|1981}} now also works (  South African Army). {{Navy}} and {{air force}} have had this functionality since 2009; {{army}} oddly didn't have it. SiBr4 (talk) 14:13, 3 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. That works a lot better now for Army! BoonDock (talk) 16:53, 4 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

SA Army ensign pre-1994 edit

At present the flagicon for the pre-1994 SA Army (flag alias-army-1981 = Ensign of the South African Defence Force (1981-1994).svg) uses this ensign:

This is the SADF ensign, not the Army's and it's use in this template is wrong. I've managed to create a proper SA Army ensign, albeit an early one used, as far as I know, during the years 1951-1966 and probably later as well:

Please use it to replace the "army-1981" image and while you're at it, create a "SADF pre-1994" template where the green SADF ensign can be put to work correctly. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 10:32, 11 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Browsing above, I also came across the 1973-1994 version. Now there's still the 1967-1972 version to look for.

Anachronistic use of current South African national flag edit

I am currently updating and replacing older uses of Template:Infobox swimmer, as well as revising swimming world record list articles. In the process of doing so, I have discovered that the overwhelming majority of pre-1994 South African athlete articles are using the incorrect South African flag, i.e., the current post-1994 flag. Virtually all of the 20th Century South African athletes whose careers ended before 1994 should be using "  South Africa," not "  South Africa." It's a problem, and it needs to be fixed. I am leaving a message here first, because I assume that editors most concerned with South African flag issues will have this talk page on their watch lists. Update request edit

Please update the naval ensigns section to replace File:Naval Ensign of South Africa (1981-1994).png with File:Naval Ensign of South Africa (1981-1994).svg.

Please also add File:Naval Ensign of South Africa (1952-1959).svg and File:Naval Ensign of South Africa (1951-1952).svg.

Lastly please correct some file name mistakes.

1) File:Naval ensign of South Africa (1946-1951).svg has been renamed to File:Naval Ensign of South Africa (1946-1951).svg

2) File:Naval Ensign of South Africa (1952-1981)-2.svg has been renamed to File:Naval Ensign of South Africa (1952-1981).svg

Thank you. Fry1989 eh? 19:44, 9 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Partly done: Done all but File:Naval Ensign of South Africa (1952-1959).svg - what alias do you want to use for that one? — Train2104 (t • c) 19:59, 9 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I'm not sure now that I think about it more. Since that ensign is nearly identical to File:Naval Ensign of South Africa (1959-1981).svg which is visually superior at such small size, we should just leave the 1959-1981 in for both. Fry1989 eh? 23:52, 9 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Current flag image edit

@Illegitimate Barrister: please could you use File:Flag of South Africa.svg here instead of File:Flag of South Africa (CIA World Factbook).gif? The CIA image is wrong in both dimension and colours. - htonl (talk) 14:04, 5 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

It's just a variant flag, the default remains unchanged. Unless specifically chosen the default version will be used as usual. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 14:53, 5 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
In that case, it would seem to be an unnecessary variant. Under what circumstances would you want to use those images - that do not correctly depict the flag of South Africa - instead of the default? - htonl (talk) 15:01, 5 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Alternatively, could you rename the variants to something like "wfb-1994" and "wfb-2004"? They way they are set up currently it seems to imply they are "official" flags adopted in those years. - htonl (talk) 15:03, 5 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Done. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 16:01, 5 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Template-protected edit request on 8 January 2019 edit

flag alias-1994 = Flag of South Africa (Pantone).svg
flag alias-2000 = Flag of South Africa (WFB 2000).svg
flag alias-2004-WFB = Flag of South Africa (WFB 2004).svg
flag alias-2013 = Flag of South Africa (WFB 2013).svg
These flags are just based on the shades used in pictures in different editions of the CIA World Factbook and not are official or even real changes to the flag used by South Africa, they should not be included and especially not linked to a specific year

I also suggest that
flag alias-1875 = Flag of the Natal Colony (1875–1910).svg
be added, and that:

flag alias-1928 = Flag of South Africa (1928–1982).svg
flag alias-1961 = Flag of South Africa (1928–1994).svg
flag alias-1982 = Flag of South Africa (1982–1994).svg
be changed to
flag alias-1928 = Flag of South Africa (1928–1994).svg
flag alias-1982 = Flag of South Africa (1982–1994).svg

and the strangely superfluous  , can be removed as there was no change in colour in 1961 (or at all, until 1982, when the colour changed from union blue to solway blue etc). The 1928-1994 file should be used as it is the agreed upon and commonly used on Union of South Africa, Flag of South Africa and Flag of South Africa (1928–1994) etc. The 1961 alias should also be unused, as there was no "1961" variant, it shouldn't be used in any articles (simply flag|union of south africa are used there instead.)

Template-protected edit request on 8 March 2019 edit

Can you replace this file with another one? Thanks. RainbowSilver2ndBackup (talk) 22:07, 8 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Not done: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit template-protected}} template. It's a flag you've just uploaded. I see no historical justification for this variation, nor any discussion about it here or at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject South Africa where it ought to be discussed.
