Automatic insertion date

This has happened a few times this week. The text in the code in this edit reads "&#91;<i>[[Wikipedia:Citation needed|<span title="This claim needs references to reliable sources.&#32;(February {{subst:2022}})">citation needed</span>]]</i>&#93;" but the body of the article reads "[[Category:Articles with unsourced statements from February {{subst:2022}}]][citation needed]". What's going on here? Kire1975 (talk) 02:01, 16 February 2023 (UTC)

The code didn't work out there either. I'll try to fix it later, but something's up with the visual editor. Kire1975 (talk) 02:02, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
Use {{Citation needed|date={{subst:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{subst:CURRENTYEAR}} }} or {{Citation needed|date=February 2023}} of {{Citation needed}} and leave it to a bot. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 07:28, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
@Kire1975: I suspect what happened is that you entered {{citation needed|date={{subst:February}} {{subst:2022}}}}. Because it seems somewhat common for people to misunderstand the instruction to use {{Citation needed|date={{subst:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{subst:CURRENTYEAR}}}} as meaning they should insert the current month and year instead of actually using the CURRENTMONTHNAME and CURRENTYEAR magic words, we have templates such as Template:February and Template:2023 that will produce the right result when substed. However, it seems like you may have used 2022 rather than the current year of 2023, and (as has been common practice) Template:2022 was deleted in January since it's no longer the current year. Thus the {{subst:2022}} remains in the wikitext. Anomie 13:32, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
