Refactoring of the data section of the VT chart to be simpler

In looking at Template:Medical_cases_chart/doc, it seems there is a MUCH simpler way to put in the data. Currently I have just been copying the entire line of 'Medical cases chart/Row' and filling it in for each day. However, that can be removed to use 'data=' and then simply have the data delimited by semi-colons, as shown in the documentation examples. At some point it would be good to refactor the data to use this simpler format. - Dyork (talk) 17:42, 31 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

  Won't fix After reading the documentation further, I now understand that there are two different ways of using this Medical cases chart template. One way is based on "data" and another on "rows". Bars are addition of BOTH deaths and cases, rather than union

Right now in the chart I'm entering both the number of deaths and the number of positive test results, and the chart is showing the sum of both deaths and positive cases. However, a death is ALSO a positive case. The result is that the chart is currently showing a higher value than is actual. What needs to happen is that we need to calculate the number to enter into the graph as "positive test results - deaths". Then the "deaths + positive cases" will sum to the correct number. Divisor updated to 2 for the charts

Note that in order to make the bar charts fit within the "medium" width, which I think looks best on the page, I needed to change the "divisor" to be 2. As far as I understand how the template works, this just shrinks all the bars by 1/2, so that they can fit. From a practical level, this means that each of the lines needs to have a change in it:

Divisor updated to 3 for the charts

I have now set divisor=3 in the chart so that it all still fits within the medium size. I would think there has to be an easier way to do this rather than going through and changing ALL the lines, but I haven't been able to figure that out yet. With the newer data parameter formatting the divisor only has to be set once or if you don't set a divisor it auto adjusts by default. Bibzgi (talk) 21:49, 10 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Corrected data for all cases

  Done - In an effort not to double-count deaths, I was subtracting deaths from the cases when entering data for the bar chart. However, it turns out that the chart template is smarter than that and already calculates the correct values. I went through the data to correct it to have the exact number of cases. VT Dept of Health now publishing "Total People Recovered"

As of 6 May 2020, the VT Department of Health started published "Total People Recovered" on their COVID-19 data dashboard. I am starting to include the number of recoveries into the data. - Dyork (talk) 15:23, 6 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

VT Dept of Health changes data to include "probable cases" - chart is now out-of-date

On Dec 2, 2020, the Vermont Department of Health Daily Update indicated that they are now including "probable" cases in the case counts. This means that the numbers will now be higher than they were before. It also means that the historical data in this chart is no longer exactly accurate, as they have retroactively changed their charts and data sources. At this point, my source for the data will be using the "new" calculations, and so the numbers will be different from the past numbers.

It is possible to download a CSV file from the VT Dept of Health site, so I could reset the entire table going back to March to use these "new" stats. That will be a good bit of work, though. For the moment I'm just using the "new" numbers. - Dyork (talk) 01:32, 3 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
