Usage edit

This template creates a properly-styled mention of a person's requested pronouns, by default linked to our article(s) on those pronouns. It italicizes the pronouns in accordance with MOS:WORDSASWORDS and applies a small amount of CSS-based kerning around the slash, similar to templates like {{"-}}.

The template creates links in the following order of precedence:

  1. If |nolink=yes, it will create none.
  2. Else, if |link= exists, it will link the full string to that (whether or not the target exists). {{pronoun pair|cat|cats|link=Nounself pronouns}}cat/cats
  3. Else, if a page exists for the first and second parameters divided by a slash, it will link the full string to that. {{pronoun pair|they|them}}they/them
  4. Else, it will handle the two halves of the pair separately:
    1. If |nolink=1 or |nolink=2, it will not link the relevant half.
    2. Else, if a page exists for the pronoun followed by  (pronoun) (e.g. she (pronoun)), it will link to that.[a]
    3. Else it will not make any automatic links.

If using manual links in either half (e.g. [[wikt:fae#Pronoun|fae]]), |nolink= should always be enabled for that half or the whole template.

In addition to ease of styling, this template makes it easier to track which articles use pronouns other than she/her and he/him, which makes it easier to monitor pronoun-related vandalism.

Notes edit

  1. ^ They (pronoun) and Them (pronoun) redirect to They, which is about both the singular and plural forms of that word, so as a special case the template narrows this to Singular they. A similar allowance could be made for it if content about it as a chosen personal pronoun is ever added somewhere.
