Template documentationThis template is intended for use in articles containing Roman names with filiations, standardized abbreviations of Roman praenomina that in Roman practice follow the nomen gentilicium and precede any cognomina. Filiations regularly appear in Roman epigraphy, and are commonly included in modern reference works, because Roman families typically used a small number of names over many generations; filiations help to distinguish individuals from other members of a family.
In most articles, filiations will be omitted in running text. The names of a Roman's father or grandfather will be written in full where they appear. However, filiations may occur in lists, such as lists of the members in articles about Roman gentes, or in other prosopographical pages; or when giving a Roman's full nomenclature in the traditional Roman format.
The filiation template places a hatnote at the beginning of an article or section, alerting readers unfamiliar with filiations to their presence, and directing them both to the article about Roman praenomina, and to the section of the general article about Roman names dealing with filiation.
