Thomas Yeoman edit

  • ... that Thomas Yeoman was the first president of the first engineering society in the world?

Created/expanded by Chris55 (talk). Nominated by Pigsonthewing (talk) at 13:09, 25 July 2013 (UTC).

  • Article is new enough and long enough, and the hook is short enough and interesting. However, DYK rules require more complete in-line citations than are present in this article before it could be featured on the main page. For example, the second paragraph in the Northampton section has no citations. As a further example, the second paragraph in the London section has no citations. There are also direct quotations in the article with no citations. This would need to be cleaned up before it can be promoted for DYK. Cbl62 (talk) 02:06, 27 July 2013 (UTC)
    • I'll take a look at that, but are you sure you've interpreted the requirements correctly? I read: " The fact(s) mentioned in the hook must be cited in the article" and "Articles for DYK should conform to the core policies of Verifiability", but nothing about what you assert is required. Supplemental DYK Rule D2: "The article in general should use inline, cited sources. A rule of thumb is one inline citation per paragraph, excluding the intro, plot summaries, and paragraphs which summarize other cited content." Cbl62 (talk) 17:17, 27 July 2013 (UTC)
The article is long enough and was new enough when nominated. The hook seems fine. There was a typographical error in the subject's name both in the lead and in the infobox, which I've corrected. It would be very nice to have a citation by that direct quotation in the first paragraph... Presumably we're meant to understand that it goes to the citation at the end of the paragraph, but perhaps a direct quotation merits a citation immediately beside it? Other than that, it would be nice to have an additional source or two, since currently it leans pretty heavily on the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. If the citations can be clarified, I'd support this one. Bryanrutherford0 (talk) 13:26, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
I tried to fix some issues here, but I've given up the effort. When I saw that the two non-Oxford sources are online and have a lot of content about Yeoman, I tried to patch in some footnotes to support that quotation and some other content. However, neither of those sources includes the quotation, and some of the details I found in the sources did not support the content in the article (for example, page 817 in the Skempton source has a somewhat different list of the canal and navigation projects that Yeoman worked on). I don't have access to the Oxford source. --Orlady (talk) 04:52, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
  • (alt)... that Thomas Yeoman was the first president of a group of non-military engineers in the English-speaking world?

I have added several new sources and found sources for the projects that were unreffed. I also rephrased some sections and added some extra detail. I know those outside the UK have difficulty in getting to the oxford source so I have included an inline quote to AGF and I have copied this quote into an alt hook. • Now that additional sourcing has been added by Victuallers, this is good to go. Cbl62 (talk) 15:06, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
