Samuel Lyde edit

  • ... that the 19th century British missionary, Samuel Lyde sparked months of anti-Christian rioting in Palestine after killing a beggar?

  • Length is great, date checks out, and both the article and the hook are very interesting. The main issue is the neutrality of the article, and therefore of the hook. Figes says Lyde had "accidentally shot a beggar". The article, however, says that he claimed that he shot him by accident, and refers only to Figes to back up that claim. I wonder if the hook should have the word "accidentally" as well, but we still have the problem of the testimony of the women, so maybe a plain "killing" is best. But the article needs fixing at this point for this to pass. StAnselm (talk) 08:02, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
  • Fair point. Figes has a wry style and I think that his later comment on the women's testimony is meant to caste doubt on Lyde's "claim" without expressly saying so. But I accept that's beyond how the source should be used. However, the other source I used for other aspects of the incident (Tibawi) says, on the same page, "He was beset by a beggar at the city gate, and either Lyde's gun was accidentally discharged, or he lost his nerve and fired". (Unfortunately full text doesn't seem to be available on Google books but this snippet view has the relevant bit.) So I've amended the sentence in the article and cited that. Hope that's ok. • OK, with that adjustment everything checks out. StAnselm (talk) 20:26, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
