Ralph Dewey edit

  • ... that Ralph Dewey is one of the pioneers in not only gospel balloon twisting, but balloon twisting in general and is known as the "grandfather of all twisters"?
  • ALT1:... that Ralph Dewey is a pioneer in gospel balloon twisting and is known as the "grandfather of all twisters"?

Created/expanded by Balloonman (talk), Bgwhite (talk). Nominated by Bgwhite (talk) at 07:28, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

  • New article prose size according to "DYK Check" is 1195 characters; DYK reqirement is 1500. Mgrē@sŏn 15:09, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
I was planning on nominating the article to DYK after expanding it some, but BG beat me to it... I knew it was too short... but it isn't anymore. I've expanded it enough that it should pass. ;-)---Balloonman Poppa Balloon 15:17, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
  • Size is now acceptable. I've identified one passage where you need to cite a source. I added source tags to several other locations, and rephrased a few awkward passages. Also, the image provided (at over 2Mb) is far too large. It really needs to be shrunk and cropped. If you need some help with that, let me know. Mgrē@sŏn 16:54, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
  • Mgreason, those "problem" templates are for the talk page of the author/nominator, not for here. ;) Drmies (talk) 17:03, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
  • I was looking at your hook and didn't recall any source that talked about pioneers in gospel balloon twisting. I went back to the reference you cited for the article's intro, and it doesn't mention "gospel" at all. Is that the only source available for "grandfather of all twisters"? Mgrē@sŏn 17:16, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
    • In all honesty, I'm not sure if *I* like that hook. I've never heard that about Ralph and while I definitely believe it is true, I think the reference for his being the "grandfather of all twisters" is kind of weak. I do, however, think we might have a great April Fools DYK:
  • Thanks for the good laugh. I entirely agree that both of those lines are perfect hooks. Bgwhite (talk) 22:43, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
  • I agree. Either is fine, but I'll have to check on waiting until April. Date and length check out, found no evidence of copyvio. I think you're good to go. Mgrē@sŏn 03:05, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
  • The April Fools DYK is the one major exception to the time period rules; the only time requirement is that the article has been written or expanded fivefold within the past year---eg since the last April Fools date. If you could be so kind as to move this to that page that would be great. Also, I think I prefer alt4 over Alt3.---Balloonman Poppa Balloon 03:42, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

ALTs 3&4 are untrue. To make these figures, balloons are inflated/blown up before they are moulded to have any resemblance to an animal. These hooks are the logical equivalent of saying that Beef Wellington can be found in fields. Kevin McE (talk) 22:50, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

It's only not true because you are unfamiliar with the community and the language used within the community. It is a common joke among balloon twisters to say that we blow things up... several twisters even use "blowing up animals" as part of their marketting or even company names! Books/magazine articles use the phrase. Hell, even one of the sources cited plays on the pun. Just because you seem to want everything to be linear doesn't make it untrue, it just means that it doesn't fit your view.---Balloonman Poppa Balloon 14:49, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Journalistic standards are not encyclopaedic standards: it is an entirely different genre of writing. What proportion of readers do you believe share the jargon of the balloon twisting community? Kevin McE (talk) 23:38, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Facepalm Facepalm It's APRIL FOOLS DAY. You may not like it, but guess what, this has been established and practiced for 7 years now. We have had discussions in the past on it and if you want to change it, then start a legitimate RfC. With postings in the typical places/venues---to include those pages which would be affected. Despite your intention to derail the process with your self imposed deadline and your interpertation of the results, you've failed. In the mean time, get off your high horse, sit back, and enjoy.---Balloonman Poppa Balloon 18:18, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
BTW, I think 98% of the people who read the above hooks, will get it whether they twist balloons or not.---Balloonman Poppa Balloon 18:21, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
The only response I can make to that is to observe that rather than actually address the points raised, you have simply reverted to ad hominem argument. Kevin McE (talk) 21:55, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
and then we might as well move it back to the regular DYK queue because it no longer has a bang/hook/catch.---Balloonman Poppa Balloon 22:32, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Stupid, stupid, stupid. I have never seen such an anal and literal line a reasoning in my life. You blow up a balloon, twist it and make an animal. Not blowing up a balloon is like like making Beef Wellington with no ingredients. Everybody in the world understands blowing up. Bgwhite (talk) 23:01, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Precisely, you blow up a balloon, and then create the animal. Kevin McE (talk) 07:04, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
  • I think ALT4 is beautiful. Drmies (talk) 23:36, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
