Kareeboomvloer massacre edit

  • Reviewed: Tipu Sultan (journalist)
  • Comment: Not sure if it is okay to have single square brackets in a citation in a DYK hook. The author actually omits the word "criminal" but considering the Herero and Namaqua Genocide it is entirely obvious that there were bigger bloodbaths, just not in form of a murder case.

Created/expanded by Eduardosenorita (talk), Pgallert (talk). Nominated by Pgallert (talk) at 22:04, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

  • If it is not too macabre to have a quirky hook about a topic as this, it could be: ALT 1: ... that during trial proceedings of the Kareeboomvloer massacre, the "biggest bloodbath in Namibian criminal history", a prison official was requested to explain the meaning of life? --Pgallert (talk) 18:39, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
* ALT 2: ... that during trial proceedings of the Kareeboomvloer massacre, a prison official was requested to explain the meaning of life?
  • At the time of nomination, it was expanded recently enough and is long enough. Article has no images. Hook is properly formatted and interesting. Article is supported by inline citations. Spot check of the sources shows not large concerns.
  • Not sure how neutral you can be describing a massacre. With out knowing the local politics, this reads as mostly neutral to me. I think Alt1 may have appear a bit POV pushing with the quote. I'd opt for ALT2 just to be safe.
  • ALT1 and ALT2 do not appear to be supported by sources, as the source does not appear to talk about life sentences, just that this was the longest sentence.
  • Quote from original DYK hook: here does not have the same translation as used in the quote though the general information appears to be supported by the German when translated to English. --LauraHale (talk) 04:42, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

Article needs a better hook with out a quote and author needs to check to make sure text is actually supported by references. --LauraHale (talk) 04:42, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

  • Hi Laura, and thanks for your time to review my submission. Pointing out the "meaning of life" referencing: It is actually supported by ref 3, not ref 2, my bad. I changed the attribution in the article. Not sure what the other concern about the quote is: "das größte Blutbad in der namibischen Geschichte" eq "the biggest bloodbath in Namibian history". That Google uses different words to translate this shouldn't count against the article text. --Pgallert (talk) 07:02, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
If the quote is removed from the hook, I'd be much more comfortable, as we're not really quoting the original, and the translation apparently allows for several. Satisfied with hook related citation changes. --LauraHale (talk) 09:55, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
  • I'm happy with ALT2 which does not contain the quote. --Pgallert (talk) 13:09, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
Good to go with Alt2. --LauraHale (talk) 20:27, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
