Inter-Allied Women's Conference

edit
  • ... that the Inter-Allied Women's Conference, which opened on 10 February 1919, marked the first time that women were granted formal participation in an international treaty negotiation?"L’incontro, che si aprì a Parigi il 10 febbraio, ebbe il nome di Conference of Women Suffragists of Entente Countries and the U.S.A e costituì l’avvio di uno dei percorsi dell’associazionismo delle donne per dar voce alle istanze femminili nei confronti della Conferenza di Pace". (The meeting, which opened in Paris on February 10th, was called the Suffragist Conference of the Allied Countries and the United States and it began the path for women's associations to give voice to women's requests to the Peace Conference)p 76; Siegel, 2019, p 7: The "Supreme Council informed Marguerite de Witt Schlumberger that women could come and “state their case” before two of the Commissions to the Peace Conference: Labor and the League of Nations. The offer was much less than the women had asked for; nevertheless, the invitation meant that for first time in modern history, women would have a role (albeit a small one) in negotiating the terms of a major international treaty". @SusunW: Can you point me to the place where "first time" gets a citation? I'm finding that explicitly stated in the lede, but can't seem to find it stated explicitly in the body. I searched on 'first' but didn't see it. valereee (talk) 13:27, 31 January 2019 (UTC)

valereee "While an audience was far less than the women had wanted, allowing them formal participation in an international treaty negotiation was unprecedented". (unprecedented: never done or known before). SusunW (talk) 18:18, 31 January 2019 (UTC)
lol, yes, I'm familiar with that word. :) Good to go with ALT0. valereee (talk) 18:24, 31 January 2019 (UTC)
  • For such an important conference and date, I would suggest writing "one hundred years ago today" rather than the date. Also, why not go for an image slot? Perhaps picture the conference organizer or some other important woman? Yoninah (talk) 18:32, 31 January 2019 (UTC)
  • :D Thanks valereee. Yoninah wasn't sure I could do that, but yes, I'd love to use "one hundred years ago today". The organizer, Marguerite de Witt-Schlumberger's picture is not particularly good and I've not found any of the entire conference. I can look and see if I can find a better one, but I'm not holding my breath. SusunW (talk) 18:37, 31 January 2019 (UTC)
  • @SusunW: So far the article doesn't say she was the organizer.
  • Here is the updated hook without image:

  • ALT0a: ... that the Inter-Allied Women's Conference, which opened in Paris 100 years ago today, marked the first time that women were granted formal participation in an international treaty negotiation (conference organizer pictured)? Yoninah (talk) 18:42, 31 January 2019 (UTC)
Yoninah I edited the text, as it is clear from the documentation that she organized it, to wit: "In response, women from the French Union for Women's Suffrage and the National Council of French Women, acting under the leadership of de Witt-Schlumberger, invited international colleagues to meet in Paris in a parallel conference scheduled to open on 10 February 1919" Siegel, 2019, p 2 "From mid-January to mid-February, Marguerite de Witt Schlumberger and the organization over which she presided, the French Union for Women’s Suffrage, pursued a two-fold strategy to demand a role for women in the historic negotiations unfolding on French soil." (Note: I received the paper from the academic via e-mail and will gladly e-mail it if needed for verification purposes). I found the original photo [1] from which the one we have was cropped, but have no idea how to replace an already uploaded photograph. If we can figure out how to do it, it can be titled Marguerite de Witt-Schlumberger, conference organizer, or something like that. SusunW (talk) 18:58, 31 January 2019 (UTC)
  • I usually ask Victuallers or David Levy for help with images. It needs to be checked for free licensing before uploading. Yoninah (talk) 19:01, 31 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks! Hopefully they will respond. The one that was uploaded says it was published in Le Pays de France, 5 juillet 1919, p. II, so before 1923. So that would seem good for PD licensing. Just have no idea how to replace the bad image with a better one. SusunW (talk) 19:05, 31 January 2019 (UTC)
If someone can upload the free image off a website and make sure it looks good (unlike the current crop), they'll rename it something else and that file can be added to the article. Yoninah (talk) 19:08, 31 January 2019 (UTC)
Yoninah not sure what I need to do now. Victuallers uploaded the better image and David Levy "enhanced it so it would be suitable for the main page". SusunW (talk) 00:01, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
Thank you both, Victuallers and David Levy. The new image is posting as the old head shot. Could you give it a different name so we can use that in the article instead? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 00:06, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
The cropped version's quality is very low, most likely because it began at the uncropped version's resolution and was enlarged significantly. I don't recommend using it for any purpose (and I agree with Victuallers's decision to replace it entirely). —David Levy 00:18, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
@David Levy: but when I click on your new enhanced image at Commons, the old, bad cropped version keeps showing up. Yoninah (talk) 00:31, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
You probably need to bypass your cache. —David Levy 00:35, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
@David Levy: That did it. Thanks! Yoninah (talk) 00:40, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
  • Freely licensed image added to article and hook. ALT0a is good to go for February 10. Yoninah (talk) 00:44, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
