Faith in Buddhism

edit
  • ... that in early Buddhism, the Buddha is quoted stating to his disciples that they should investigate him before developing faith, as to whether he truly is enlightened or not? Sources: De Silva, p.215 "When observing him [the Buddha] for a long time, if they find no corrupt conduct, nor a mixture of good and evil qualities and they find only virtuous conduct they can come to the conclusion that the Buddha is truly enlightened."; Jayatilleke pp.390–393 "Here it is said that 'an enquiring monk, who can read the thoughts of another, should examine the Tathāgata to determine whether he is enlightened or not.' ... We may see from this that doubt ... plays a central role in the process of inquiry which is considered to be essential, prior to and for the generation of belief (or faith)."
  • ALT1 ... that translator and monastic Bhikkhu Bodhi believes that people have underestimated the role of faith in Buddhist teaching? Source: McMahan, p.248 "He [Bhikkhu Bodhi] rejects the idea that 'a follower of the Buddhist path can dispense with all faith and doctrine' ... 'Rather, while testing those elements of the dharma that fall within the purview of their experience, Buddhists must, having verified these, place faith in the Buddha's doctrines that are beyond their current ability to verify personally (1998).'"

Substantial article, on excellent sources, offline sources accepted AGF, no copyvio. I am not happy with the original hook, liking the ALT better. What do you think of this:
Bhikkhu Bodhi
Bhikkhu Bodhi
ALT2: ... that people have underestimated the role of faith in Buddhism, according to translator and monastic Bhikkhu Bodhi (pictured)?
I made some copy-editing, looking forward to a peer review: no fixed image sizes, and full stops in captions only after sentences, among others. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:07, 22 February 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the tips, Gerda. I also would be happy to start the peer review for FA. Above here, I think that ALT2 is better. Please note that there are no offline sources: all sources should be accessible, and if they are not, please let me know. And also, any idea on how to integrate the image into the formatting? ALT3: ... that in early Buddhist scriptures, the Buddha states to his disciples that they should investigate him before developing faith?
This one should be better. Fixed the double that and shortened the sentence.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 08:41, 23 February 2018 (UTC)
Thank you, that's better, but I still think the other fact is more attractive for our general readership. If you want to work on ALT3, please find a way to mention bold "faith in Buddhism" (but that "in" has a bit of a double meaning, - perhaps "in Buddhism, faith"). - Sorry about leaving my standard sentence about "offline". - The image is lovely, but it's Buddha, not faith, which is pictured, and I don't know any good image to illustrate faith. If you want to pursue to have it with image, get it in here, - simply look at a nomination with image and copy the code from there. Best then to find a way to mention the Buddha. Hard to do, I understand, without suggesting that "faith in the Buddha" might be meant. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:04, 23 February 2018 (UTC)
Well, let's go for alt2 then. Added an image of Bhikkhu Bodhi.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 09:14, 23 February 2018 (UTC)
Thank you! I formatted and moved the image, and added the standard (pictured), next time copy from here ;) - In a peer review, I'll say that the lead has too many explanations of Buddhism in general, rather than focusing on the faith aspect. You can work on that already ;) - I want to review a few other things before I'll get to it. A FAC should have alternate texts for all images (explaining what's on the image as if describing it to someone blind), and image licenses get checked thoroughly, - if a license is doubtful, better remove. For DYK, I check only the one to be pictured, which seems good, and the face illustrates faith better than I thought anything would! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:09, 23 February 2018 (UTC)
