  • Comment: Promoted to mainspace from AfC after verification and lead of importance.

  • Great stuff, coming quickly through AFC. I should say I have made minor tidying edits. Is it exactly right to call him an "amateur" though? As I understand it he was doing the excavation as part of his work for the government. He was untrained and inexperienced, but few archaeologists had much "training" at that date. Also it is "the" leading and official emblem of India.
  • ALT1 ... that the Lion Capital of Asoka, the leading emblem of India, was rediscovered by an archaeologist with effectively no previous experience? A bit wordy maybe?
    • I'm open to suggestions as this is my very first DYK nomination. My goal was to keep the hook as short as possible as I have seen that shorter hooks are more likely to get passed. I didn't want to stray too far or synthesize something that was more sensational. Hasteur (talk) 22:38, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
      • This is still pretty short. You should add a pic of the capital I think. The ref used at Lion Cap has a more precise statement of his lack of experience, if that is needed. Johnbod (talk) 00:51, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
        • I looked, and the picture we have on file for the actual capital is being used under non-free terms (which means we can't use it for the DYK) and makes the focus more the capital than the biography, however the photograph that is in the lead of the Oertel article is patently public domain, so would be available for usage. Let's go ahead with the ALT1 hook Hasteur (talk) 16:23, 29 August 2013 (UTC)
  • Since Alt1 is mine, can another reviewer check it? Johnbod (talk) 16:30, 29 August 2013 (UTC)
Age, length both look OK. AGF on the hook cite, which is an offline book source. Strictly speaking, i'm not sure we have a cite here that says that this capital was the one that became the emblem of India, but it seems perhaps self evident, and certainly not disputed as I read it. Good to go. hamiltonstone (talk) 13:54, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
