Chappel Viaduct edit

Chappel Viaduct
Chappel Viaduct
  • ... that the Chappel Viaduct (pictured) is reputed to be the second-largest brick-built structure in England?

Created by HJ Mitchell (talk). Self-nominated at 18:51, 21 February 2016 (UTC).

Article is new enough and long enough. Image is correctly licensed and captioned. Hook is correctly formatted. Article is neutral and well referenced. AGF on offline sources. One of the refs was dead for me so that needs fixing. I did some light copy editing and introduced more sections, I hope the nominator doesn't mind. I am unclear what the source is for the theft of the coins so that needs to be added. The first hook states that it is "reputed" to be the second largest but the BBC say it is so I think we could drop "reputed"? There is no source for the claim that it is the longest bridge in East Anglia. Historic England say it cost £32K (materials only?) to build not £21K? It "rises to a maximum height of 1,060 feet (320 m)" is that sea level as the rest says 75ft? If the nom has time he could put in a map from Open Street Map (optional). I detected no close paraphrasing or copyvios. Philafrenzy (talk) 12:12, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
@Philafrenzy: I can't explain the discrepancy on the cost; Labrum definitely says £21k and HE says £32k; I'd rather not add a map as it would the infobox long and unwieldy and the space would be better used for another photo (in my opinion anyway; reasonable minds can differ). The height was actually the length (that's what I get for editing late at night!). Your edits were fine; they had the unfortunate side effect of moving material away from its supporting reference, but I've tidied up the fact tags now, including for the 'longest bridge' quote. As for 'reputed', I know Stockport Viaduct makes a competing claim to be the largest brick structure in England (a/o to Battersea power station); it's an interesting tidbit but I imagine there will be several competing claims so I hedged my bets. @HJ Mitchell: It's nearly there. The dimensions still don't match in the info box and article for length or height. I removed the dead link as the archived version didn't seem to contain any info and there were several other refs in the same place. I think there needs to be some treatment of the different costs. We say one thing in the article but a linked RS says another. Can you just say source A says X and source B says Y, or just delete the cost completely? @Philafrenzy: I've fixed both now. Is there anything else that needs addressing? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 13:59, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
It's good to go with either hook. AGF on the source for the second. Philafrenzy (talk) 14:19, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

After discussion at WT:DYK#Dubious claim in queue 5, I have reopened this nomination. The hook wasn't wrong, but it wasn't exactly right either, so... Fram (talk) 07:47, 4 March 2016 (UTC)

  • Given that this was pulled because of the original hook, I've struck it. The following ALT hook was suggested by Hassocks5489 in the abovementioned discussion (I've used "pub" rather than "bar", as offered there):
  • ALT2: ... that newly minted coins placed inside a pier of Chappel Viaduct went missing within hours, and a bricklayer who proffered a new half-sovereign in a pub was suspected?
Reviewer needed to check the new ALT2 hook, which I think is far more interesting than the surviving ALT1. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:30, 4 March 2016 (UTC)
  • AGF on the ALT2 hook facts as the sources are offline. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:57, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
