Creating new page for Miomastodon

edit

Wang et al. (2020) resurrect Miomastodon Osborn, 1922 from synonymy with Zygolophodon based on comparisons of Zygolophodon gobiensis (Osborn & Granger, 1932) and Zygolophodon tongxinensis (Chen, 1978) with the type species of Miomastodon, M. merriami but also the Zygolophodon type species and gomphotheres, placing both species in Miomastodon. In their renaming of American mastodons from the western US as Mammut pacificus, Dooley et al. (2019) hinted that Miomastodon needed to be re-assessed relative to Zygolophodon, and the paper by Wang et al. confirms hints by Dooley et al. that Miomastodon is a separate genus from Zygolophodon. Therefore, I wanted to ask if anyone volunteer to create a new Wikipedia article for Miomastodon.

  • How can the Zygolophodon type species be placed in Miomastodon? FunkMonk (talk) 16:47, 14 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
    • To answer your question, the Zygolophodon type species represents a separate genus from Miomastodon, if you haven't seen the Miomastodon paper by Wang et al., who recognize four valid species of Miomastodon: M. merriami (type species), M. gobiensis (Osborn & Granger, 1932), M. tongxinensis (Chen, 1978), and M. metachinjiensis (Osborn, 1929). The middle Miocene taxon Zygolophodon (?) junggarensis Chen, 1988 is assigned to Miomastodon sp. by Wang et al. Therefore, Miomastodon is a different genus than the type species of Zygolophodon.70.175.133.224 (talk) 18:53, 14 March 2020 (UTC)Vahe DemirjianReply
I suspect there was a misunderstanding. The proposal is only to move the non-type species gobiensis and tongxinensis, based on comparisons with the type species. Lythronaxargestes (talk | contribs) 21:29, 14 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
